The Cisco PVDM4-32 is a refurbished packet voice digital signal processor module from the Cisco PVDM4 Series, listed under our SKU MOD-CISCO-PVDM4-32. It adds 32 channels of DSP capacity to a Cisco ISR router and carries out the voice codec processing that the router's main processor does not handle itself. That work is what lets an ISR act as a voice gateway, passing calls between the PSTN and an IP telephony system. Buyers in Doha and across Qatar usually fit a PVDM4-32 for one of three reasons: to add voice capacity to an ISR that already carries calls, to replace a failed DSP module, or to equip a router that will terminate PSTN lines for a VoIP deployment. Installation
DSP modules are not hot-swappable, so shut the router down cleanly and remove power before opening the chassis or the module carrier. Wear an anti-static wrist strap, hold the module by its edges, and seat it fully in a free PVDM slot until the retaining clips engage. After power-up, run show inventory to confirm the router has detected the PVDM4-32, then check that the DSP resources appear under the voice card configuration in Cisco IOS. Gateway calls, transcoding and conferencing then need to be assigned to those DSP resources in the voice configuration before the extra channels are used. Keep a copy of the running configuration before the change so the router can be returned to its previous state if needed.
