This range covers the storage that goes into and around business servers: SAS and SATA hard drives, SAS, SATA and NVMe solid-state drives, NAS units and storage servers, and parts such as array controller canisters. Which type of storage fits the job
Most buying decisions come down to capacity against speed. Spinning disks give the lowest cost per terabyte; flash gives far more operations per second and lower latency. Shared storage for a whole office is a separate question from the drives inside one server.

What decides whether a drive will work
Four things: the bay size (2.5-inch SFF or 3.5-inch LFF), the interface the controller and backplane accept, the drive caddy for your server's generation, and the firmware. A SAS controller can run SATA drives, but a SATA-only controller cannot run SAS drives. NVMe drives need bays wired for NVMe or a suitable PCIe slot. Dell and HPE drives carry vendor firmware, and a server may raise warnings for a drive it does not recognise.

Should I use SSDs or hard drives in a server?
Use SSDs where speed matters: boot volumes, virtual machines, databases and anything with many small reads and writes. Use hard drives where capacity per riyal matters: backups, file archives and video retention. Many servers mix both, with a small SSD array for the operating system and busy data and a larger hard drive array for bulk storage.
What is the difference between SAS and SATA drives?
SAS is the enterprise interface, running at 12Gb/s on current drives, with two ports and full-duplex links. SATA runs at 6Gb/s with a single port and costs less per terabyte. A SAS controller or backplane accepts both types, while a SATA-only controller accepts SATA drives only. Check your controller before choosing SAS.
Can I fit a 2.5-inch drive into a 3.5-inch server bay?
Often yes, using an adapter caddy that holds a 2.5-inch drive in a 3.5-inch tray. The drive must still match the interface the backplane supports, and the adapter must suit the tray design of your server. Send us the server model and we will confirm the right combination before you order.
Will a non-Dell or non-HPE drive work in my server?
A generic drive with the right interface and form factor usually runs, but Dell and HPE servers may flag it as uncertified, show less health information or refuse firmware updates for it. For production servers most buyers choose vendor-branded drives with vendor firmware. Ask the team if you are unsure which your server needs.
Do you sell new or refurbished storage?
Both. Each listing states its condition. Refurbished drives and systems are tested before they are listed, and new and refurbished hardware alike is covered by the ServerDove warranty. Extended warranty can be quoted on request for business customers who need longer cover on a deployment.
