HPE 872479-B21 1.2TB 10K 12G SAS 2.5 inch hard drive in Smart Carrier, for SFF hot-plug bays in HPE ProLiant servers.
This is a new HPE 1.2TB SAS hard drive sold under option number 872479-B21, with spare number 872737-001 for the same part. It spins at 10,000 RPM, connects over a 12Gb/s SAS interface, uses native 512-byte sectors and comes fitted in an HPE Smart Carrier, the tray used in ProLiant Gen9 and Gen10 small form factor bays. HPE classes it as a Mission Critical drive and ships it with digitally signed firmware, so a compatible controller can verify that only authenticated HPE firmware is loaded. It is bought by administrators and integrators running ProLiant servers with SFF SAS backplanes who need to add capacity, replace a failed array member or keep every bay on the HPE-qualified part number. It suits operating system volumes, database and application storage, and RAID arrays where predictable random I/O matters more than capacity per bay. We hold it in Doha for customers across Qatar.
SD-HDD-HPE-872479B21-1T2-NEWForm factor 2.5 inch SFFWill it fit my system?
The drive is used in ProLiant servers with SFF SAS backplanes and Smart Carrier bays. The models below take it in their 2.5 inch hot-plug bays.
| Server | Generation | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ProLiant DL360 Gen9 | Gen9 | SFF SAS Smart Carrier bays |
| ProLiant DL360 Gen10 | Gen10 | SFF SAS Smart Carrier bays |
| ProLiant DL380 Gen10 | Gen10 | SFF SAS Smart Carrier bays |
Carrier type and backplane support vary between generations and configurations, so the server needs SFF bays that accept the Smart Carrier. On a 6Gb/s controller or backplane the drive runs at 6Gb/s; a single 10K disk does not saturate that link, so the practical effect on throughput is small.
Specification
The 10K spindle and 12Gb/s link place this drive between 7.2K nearline disks and SAS SSDs: better random I/O and latency than nearline drives, at a lower cost per terabyte than solid state. The 512n format avoids partition alignment concerns on older operating systems, hypervisors and controllers that are not 4K-aware.
Installation
In a supported hot-plug bay the drive can be inserted or removed with the server running. Before pulling an existing drive, check the Smart Carrier indicator: it shows when a drive is part of an active array and should not be removed. When replacing a failed array member, fit a drive of the same capacity, speed and sector format, and let the Smart Array or other SAS controller finish the rebuild before touching any other drive. RAID level is configured on the controller, and the number of drives installed limits which levels can be built.

Ask on WhatsApp sales@serverdove.comWhat is the difference between 872479-B21 and 872737-001?
Both numbers refer to the same drive. 872479-B21 is the HPE option part number, used when ordering the drive as an upgrade or addition to a server configuration. 872737-001 is the spare part number, used by HPE service and on replacement records. Either number identifies the 1.2TB 12G SAS 10K SFF Smart Carrier drive with digitally signed firmware.
Which ProLiant servers use this drive?
It is used in HPE ProLiant servers with SFF SAS backplanes and Smart Carrier bays, including the DL360 Gen9, DL360 Gen10 and DL380 Gen10. For other models, check the server's QuickSpecs. Carrier type and backplane support vary between generations and configurations.
Will it work on a 6Gb/s SAS controller?
SAS is backward compatible between link rates. A 12Gb/s SAS drive normally negotiates down to 6Gb/s when attached to a 6G controller or backplane. A single 10K hard drive does not saturate a 6Gb/s link, so in most cases the practical effect on throughput is small. Controller and backplane support should still be confirmed for the host system.
What does 512n mean for this drive?
512n means the drive uses native 512-byte sectors, both logically and physically. This avoids the partition alignment and compatibility concerns that can arise with 4K-native or 512e drives on older operating systems, hypervisors or controllers. When mixing drives in one RAID array, it is good practice to keep the sector format consistent across members.
Does the drive come with a carrier?
The part number includes an HPE Smart Carrier (SC), the tray design used in the ProLiant generations this drive is listed for. The SC carrier slides into supported 2.5-inch hot-plug bays and shows drive activity and status. It also indicates when a drive should not be removed because it is part of an active array.
Which RAID levels can I use with it?
The drive itself does not determine RAID levels. These are set by the controller in the server, for example an HPE Smart Array controller, which may support levels such as RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 and others depending on model and licensing. The number of drives installed also limits which levels can be built.
What is digitally signed firmware?
Digitally signed (DS) firmware is cryptographically signed by HPE. Compatible controllers and update tools can verify that a firmware image is authentic before it is applied, which helps prevent tampered or unauthorised firmware being loaded onto the drive. It forms part of HPE's firmware security approach across ProLiant servers.
When should I choose a 10K SAS drive over an SSD or 7.2K drive?
A 10K SAS drive gives better random I/O and latency than 7.2K nearline drives, at a lower cost per terabyte than SAS SSDs. It suits boot volumes, general application servers and RAID arrays with moderate I/O demand. Heavy transactional workloads usually benefit from SSDs, while bulk archive storage is better served by higher-capacity 7.2K drives.
What does refurbished mean at ServerDove?
