RAID Levels Explained: RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 for Business Servers
RAID levels appear in nearly every storage decision, usually as though everyone already knows why RAID 6 beats...
This range brings together rack and tower servers from Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant, along with HPE StoreEasy storage servers and occasional compute nodes from other makers. It spans several hardware generations, from Xeon E5 machines such as the Dell R630 and HPE DL360 Gen9, through Xeon Scalable systems like the R640, R740 and DL380 Gen10, to newer Dell models such as the R650 and T160.
It is aimed at businesses and integrators in Qatar who need a virtualisation host, file server, database node or office tower, and want to choose the generation that fits the workload and the budget.
A 1U rack server puts two processors and a full set of memory slots in the smallest space, which suits virtualisation clusters and web or application tiers. A 2U server gives up density for more drive bays, more PCIe slots and room for full-height cards. A tower needs no rack at all and suits an office, clinic or shop that has a comms cupboard rather than a data room.
Dell and HPE moved to new platforms at roughly the same points, so their generations line up. Within one row, processors and memory type are shared.
| Dell PowerEdge | HPE ProLiant | Processors | Memory |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12th gen (R620) | Gen8 | Xeon E5-2600 v1/v2 | DDR3 |
| 13th gen (R630, R730) | Gen9 | Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 | DDR4 |
| 14th gen (R440, R640, R740, T440) | Gen10 | Xeon Scalable, 1st and 2nd gen | DDR4 |
| 15th gen (R650, R650xs) | - | Xeon Scalable, 3rd gen | DDR4 |
Newer generations bring more cores per socket, faster memory and longer firmware support. Older ones cost less and have plentiful spare parts, which makes them a sensible choice for labs, backup targets and light workloads. Memory type and processor socket change between generations, so plan upgrades within one row. Browse by brand in Dell servers and HPE servers.
A configured server arrives with the processors, memory and drives named in its title. A barebone is a chassis you complete yourself, useful when you already hold drives or want a specific build. Each listing states what is included. Add parts from server memory and hard drives, or ask the team to build it for you.
Servers ship from stock in Doha, and delivery across Qatar is typically one day. Refurbished units are tested before they are listed and all hardware is covered by the ServerDove warranty, with extended cover quoted on request. Installation, racking, cabling and base configuration are available as a service. For a build that is not listed, or a quotation on several units, message +974 5521 2108 on WhatsApp or email sales@serverdove.com.
For most small and mid-sized workloads a refurbished server does the same job for much less money. Virtualisation hosts, file servers and domain controllers rarely need the latest platform. Buy new, or the newest generation available, when you need the longest possible firmware support, the highest core counts or PCIe Gen4 devices. ServerDove sells both, and refurbished units are tested before they are listed.
Height in the rack. A 1U server is 1.75 inches tall and packs two processors and a full set of memory slots into the least space. A 2U server has room for more drive bays, more PCIe slots and full-height or double-width cards such as GPUs. Choose 1U for density and 2U for storage and expansion.
A barebone is a server chassis supplied without some or all of the processors, memory and drives, so you can complete it to your own specification. What is included varies by listing, so read the title and description. If you would rather receive a working server, the team can build and test a configuration for you before delivery.
For VMware, Hyper-V or Proxmox hosts, the Xeon Scalable generation (Dell 14th generation, HPE Gen10) is the usual choice: high core counts, plenty of DDR4 slots and hypervisor support that is still current. Xeon E5 v3/v4 machines remain fine for smaller clusters and labs. Check that your hypervisor version supports the processor before you buy.
Not always. Memory type, processor socket, drive caddy, backplane, controller and firmware all differ between brands and generations. We do not assume compatibility. Send the model or service tag of the server, and the parts you want to reuse, and the team will confirm what fits before you order.
Yes. Servers ship from stock in Doha and delivery across Qatar is typically one day. Installation, racking, cabling and base configuration are available as a service, so the server can arrive ready to join your network. Ask for this when you request a quote.
