About this hard drive

HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 HUS724040ALS640, a 4TB 7,200 RPM 3.5-inch dual-port SAS hard drive for LFF server and storage bays.

The HUS724040ALS640 is a 4TB, 7,200 RPM, 3.5-inch hard drive from HGST's Ultrastar 7K4000 enterprise line, with a dual-port 6Gb/s SAS interface and 64MB cache. It fits servers, storage shelves and enclosures that take large form factor (LFF) drives on a SAS backplane. We supply it refurbished from Doha to system administrators and integrators in Qatar who need to expand array capacity or replace a failed member of an existing RAID set with the same model. The drive is built for capacity-led work where cost per terabyte matters more than random I/O performance: file and backup repositories, archive tiers, video surveillance retention and large RAID 5 or RAID 6 volumes. For databases or busy virtual machine datastores, SSDs or 10K and 15K drives give lower latency, and a common approach is to pair drives like this one with an SSD cache or tier.

Specification

The interface is 6Gb/s SAS with two independent ports on the connector. On a 12Gb/s SAS controller or backplane the link negotiates down to 6Gb/s, which is not a bottleneck for a 7,200 RPM drive, while other devices on the same controller keep running at 12Gb/s. The SAS connector is keyed so it does not mate with SATA-only ports, so the host needs a SAS HBA, SAS RAID controller or SAS backplane.

Installation

In a hot-swap bay the drive needs the carrier that matches the host server's drive cage, since each server maker uses its own carrier design to seat the drive against the backplane. The bare drive has standard 3.5-inch mounting holes, so fixed internal bays in towers and enclosures take it with screws or rails. With a matching carrier in a hot-swap bay, a failed array member can be pulled and this drive inserted while the server is running, and most RAID controllers then start the rebuild automatically or on command.

When replacing or adding to an array, use SAS drives of at least 4TB with the same 7,200 RPM speed and 512-byte sector size: most controllers size the array on its smallest member, and matched drives avoid performance imbalance during rebuilds. In dual-expander JBODs and dual-controller arrays both SAS ports can be connected for multipath, so access continues if one path fails. On a standard single-path server backplane only one port is used and the drive operates normally.

Why buy refurbished

Enterprise hardware, tested in Doha, at a fraction of the price of new

Every unit we sell has already proven itself in a data centre. We test it again, grade it, and back it with a warranty before it leaves our stock.

Talk to our team

Tested before it ships

POST, burn-in, memory and power-supply checks on every unit. Anything that fails is repaired or pulled from stock, not sold.

Same performance, lower cost

A Xeon runs the same workloads whether it is new or two years old. Spend the difference on more CPUs, memory or storage.

In stock, not on order

New enterprise hardware can take weeks or months to arrive. Ours is on the shelf in Doha and delivered across Qatar within a day.

Warranty and local support

Every unit is covered. Installation, configuration and hardware support are handled by our own team in Qatar, not a call centre abroad.
