HPE part 781514-002 is the 1.2TB 10,000 rpm SAS drive HPE fitted across ProLiant Gen9 and Gen10 servers as the standard performance drive: a 2.5 inch small form factor unit on a 12Gb/s SAS interface, hot-pluggable in the SFF bays and recognised by Smart Array controllers as an HPE drive. It is the same part ServerDove fits in pairs to its own assembled ProLiant servers. It is refurbished and sold as a bare drive. Buyers in Qatar use 781514-002 to match the drives already in a ProLiant array, to fill the open bays of a refurbished Gen9 or Gen10 server with the factory drive, or as a like for like replacement. As the most common HPE drive of its generation, 781514-002 is the one most likely to be found in an existing array, which makes repairs straightforward. Its 10K spindle delivers roughly 200 megabytes per second sequentially and the random access that databases and virtual machines need from spinning storage; a RAID 10 set of eight is a capable datastore. The 12Gb/s interface matches Gen9 and Gen10 backplanes exactly.
Two of these are fitted to ServerDove's assembled Gen9 and Gen10 servers as the system volume, so buyers of those servers can add matching drives from the same stock to fill the remaining six bays. The drive uses 512 byte emulation over 4K physical sectors, standard for its generation and handled transparently by Smart Array controllers, and a rebuild of one drive completes in an hour or two.
Installation
Fit the drive in an HPE SmartDrive carrier, not included, and hot-plug it into the ProLiant bay. The Smart Array controller identifies the part and rebuilds a degraded logical drive automatically; otherwise use Smart Storage Administrator or iLO to add it to an array or set it as a spare. A 1.2TB rebuild completes in an hour or two under light load. Keep firmware consistent across the array with HPE's service pack updates.
