This Dell 1.92TB SSD is a read intensive enterprise drive on a SATA 6Gb/s interface in the 2.5 inch form factor, using the 512e sector format in which 4K physical sectors are presented as 512 byte sectors for compatibility. RI in Dell's naming marks the endurance class: around one full drive write per day, the right grade for storage that is read far more than it is written. It is refurbished and sold as a bare drive. Buyers in Qatar use it as virtual machine storage, a file server's fast tier or a database read replica in PowerEdge servers, four of them in RAID 10 giving nearly 4TB of flash in four bays. The 512e format matters for one reason: a 512e drive can join a RAID set with 512n drives and boot older operating systems, whereas a 4Kn drive cannot, so this drive slots into existing virtual disks without a format mismatch. Performance is at the SATA limit, about 550 megabytes per second reading, with the steady write behaviour and power loss protection of an enterprise part. Fit the drive in a Dell 2.5 inch caddy, not included, or a 3.5 inch adapter caddy for LFF bays, and hot-plug it into a running PowerEdge. The PERC detects it and it can be added to a virtual disk or set as a hot spare through iDRAC. For several SSDs, RAID 10 gives the best write latency and RAID 5 the most capacity; keep SSDs separate from hard drives in their own virtual disks.
