Dell EMC PowerEdge R650xs refurbished 1U barebone rack server, dual LGA4189 sockets, for building a custom 3rd Gen Xeon Scalable system.
The Dell EMC PowerEdge R650xs is a 1U, two-socket rack server from Dell's 15th generation PowerEdge line. It was released in 2021 and is built around 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors in LGA4189 sockets. This refurbished unit, our SKU SRV-DELL-R650XS-BARE, is supplied as a barebone with no CPU, no RAM and no drives fitted. The platform takes DDR4 ECC registered memory, SAS, SATA and NVMe drives and PCIe 4.0 expansion cards. It works with the PERC H745 RAID controller, supports dual redundant power supplies and is managed through iDRAC9. The xs model is the cost-focused version of the R650, with 16 DIMM slots instead of 32. Buyers in Doha and across Qatar choose it when they already hold processors and memory, want to match an existing R650xs estate, or need a 1U host built to an exact specification for virtualisation, hosting or a lab.

The R650xs accepts only 3rd Gen Xeon Scalable processors. Earlier LGA3647 processors and later LGA4677 processors do not fit the socket.

DDR5 modules and unbuffered desktop DIMMs will not work in this platform. Mix only DIMMs of the same type and rank where possible, and keep capacities identical across channels. Drive carriers must match the bay size: 3.5 inch and 2.5 inch carriers are not interchangeable. NVMe drives need a chassis and backplane wired for NVMe, so check the bay layout before buying U.2 drives.
Chassis and platform
The R650xs belongs to Dell's 15th generation, the Ice Lake platform, so it uses DDR4 memory and PCIe 4.0 rather than the DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 of later systems. Bay counts are the front and rear options the platform was built with. Each memory channel takes one DIMM, which is why the slot count is half that of the R650.
What you need to add
A barebone needs its core components before it will boot. Plan the build around the workload first, then choose parts that match the platform.
- Processors: one or two 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs for LGA4189, with heatsinks suited to a 1U chassis.
- Memory: DDR4 ECC registered DIMMs, up to 3200 MT/s, up to 8 per installed processor.
- Drives and caddies: SAS, SATA or NVMe drives in Dell carriers that match the bay size of the chassis.
- Storage controller: a PERC H745 or similar if the build needs hardware RAID.
- Power supplies: a matching pair of the same wattage if redundancy is required.
For a dual-processor build, fit two identical CPUs with the same model and stepping. Populate memory evenly across both processors so each one has the same capacity and channel count. One DIMM per channel across all eight channels of a processor gives the best memory bandwidth. Size the power supplies for the processors and drives you fit, since a 1U chassis with high-wattage CPUs and NVMe drives draws more than a light build.
