Dell's M.2 PCIe dual SSD adapter, sold under part numbers 0NTRCY and 023PX6, is a PCIe expansion card with two M.2 slots for NVMe SSDs, allowing a server or workstation without M.2 sockets on its board to run NVMe storage and boot from it. It is the card ServerDove fits to one of its own Precision workstations to carry a 512GB NVMe drive, and it is offered here refurbished as a bare card. Buyers in Qatar use it to add fast NVMe storage to Precision workstations and PowerEdge servers of the PCIe 3.0 generation, either as a boot pair or as a scratch and cache tier, without occupying drive bays. Two NVMe drives on one card need eight PCIe lanes to run at full speed, and the host system must support PCIe bifurcation, splitting one x16 or x8 slot into two x4 links, for both drives to appear; Dell's Precision workstations and PowerEdge servers offer this in their BIOS on specific slots. In a slot without bifurcation only one drive is visible. Booting from the card depends on the system's UEFI firmware, which Dell's supports.
Two NVMe drives on this card give a workstation a fast boot drive and a scratch drive without using a single drive bay, and in a server they provide a mirrored boot pair that stays independent of the RAID controller and its drives, which simplifies rebuilding the storage later. M.2 drives of the 2280 length are the standard fit; the card carries the screws.
Installation
Fit the M.2 drives to the card with their retaining screws before installing it. Power the system down, seat the card in a PCIe x8 or x16 slot that the manual lists as supporting bifurcation, and enable that setting in the BIOS for the slot. Boot and confirm both drives appear in the BIOS storage list, then install the operating system in UEFI mode to boot from one, or mirror the pair in software.
