The PERC H710 is Dell's mainstream hardware RAID controller of the 12th generation PowerEdge: a PCIe 3.0 card with a 6Gb/s SAS interface for SAS and SATA drives, 512MB or 1GB of battery backed cache depending on the variant, and support for RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. The cache is what makes it a real RAID controller, absorbing writes and rebuilding parity without stalling the drives. It is refurbished. Buyers in Qatar use the H710 to replace a failed controller in an R620 class server, to upgrade a server from a cacheless controller, or to complete a barebone chassis of that generation. The H710 came in three physical forms, a standard PCIe adapter, a Mini Mono for the system board slot and a Mini Blade; the cache size varies by form, with 512MB on most and 1GB on the P variant. Its battery backed cache allows write-back caching, which gives RAID 5 and RAID 6 arrays good write performance; the battery must be healthy or the controller falls back to write-through and slows. It handles eight internal ports over two SAS connectors and works with 12Gb/s drives at 6Gb/s.

Installation
Power the server down and unplug it. Fit the card in a PCIe slot, or in the Mini Mono slot for that form, connect the two SAS cables from the backplane, and secure the bracket. On boot, enter the controller BIOS or iDRAC, update firmware with Dell's tools, and check the cache battery status before creating virtual disks. Foreign configurations from a previous server can be imported if the drives came with the card.
