The PERC H730 is the mainstream cached RAID controller of Dell's 13th generation PowerEdge servers: a 12Gb/s SAS card for SAS and SATA drives with 1GB of non-volatile cache, a PCIe 3.0 host interface and RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. It is named for the R630, R730 and R730xd, and it is the controller ServerDove fits to its own assembled R630 and R640 servers. It is refurbished. Buyers in Qatar fit the H730 to a 13th generation barebone or to a server that arrived with the cacheless H330, gaining a battery protected cache that makes RAID 5 and RAID 6 arrays perform for databases and virtual machines. Specification
The H730's cache is non-volatile: on power loss its contents are copied to flash on the card, backed by a small battery, so write-back caching is safe and the cache survives a long outage. The controller supports non-RAID pass-through for individual drives, online capacity expansion and hot spares, and it drives 12Gb/s SSDs at full speed. Dell sold it in Mini Mono, PCIe adapter and Mini Blade forms; the Mini Mono goes in the system board's storage slot and uses no PCIe slot.
Installation
Power the server down and unplug it, fit the card in the dedicated storage slot or a PCIe slot according to its form, connect the backplane SAS cables to its ports and secure it. Boot into the BIOS or iDRAC, update the firmware with Dell's tools, confirm the cache battery reports healthy, and create the virtual disks. Drives that came from another H730 can be imported as a foreign configuration with their data intact.
