Dell PERC H740P 8GB NV cache RAID controller, a PERC 10 card for 12Gb/s SAS and SATA drives in PowerEdge 14G servers.
The Dell PERC H740P is a refurbished Series 10 hardware RAID controller for PowerEdge 14G servers, built on the Broadcom SAS3508 RAID-on-chip with 8GB of DDR4 non-volatile cache. Dell lists it under part numbers 0878M, 57V8G, 4R84R and 05FMY4. It runs SAS drives at 12Gb/s and SATA drives at 6Gb/s, hard disks and SSDs alike, and it is the higher-cache internal controller in the PERC 10 range. The flash-backed cache lets write-back caching stay enabled without putting data at risk on power loss, which matters most for parity arrays in RAID 5, 6, 50 and 60. IT teams in Doha and across Qatar fit it to R640, R740 and R740xd hosts running databases, virtualisation clusters and file servers, either as a direct replacement for a failed H740P or as an upgrade from a lower-cache PERC. Non-RAID mode lets one card carry a mirrored boot volume alongside pass-through disks for software-defined storage.
RAID-DELL-H740P-8GBWill it fit my system?
The H740P serves drives in the server's own backplane. For external SAS enclosures such as PowerVault expansion shelves, the PERC H840 is the matching PERC 10 card with external ports.
| Server | Generation | Note |
|---|---|---|
| PowerEdge R640 | 14G | 1U, internal drive backplane |
| PowerEdge R740 | 14G | 2U, internal drive backplane |
| PowerEdge R740xd | 14G | 2U, high drive count chassis |
| PowerEdge T640 | 14G | Tower or rack conversion |
| PowerEdge R6415 | 14G (AMD) | Single-socket AMD EPYC |
| PowerEdge R7515 | 15G (AMD) | Single-socket AMD EPYC |
The H740P exists as a mini monolithic card for the dedicated slot on PowerEdge motherboards and as an adapter for standard PCIe slots. Match the part number to the version your chassis uses.
Specification
The H740P belongs to PERC Series 10, the controller generation Dell introduced with its 14th generation PowerEdge servers. SATA drives always run at 6Gb/s on this card, whatever the SAS link speed, and SAS and SATA drives are normally kept in separate virtual disks.
Installation
The controller is not hot-plug: shut the server down, remove the power cords and use an anti-static strap before opening the chassis. Seat the card in the dedicated mini monolithic slot or a PCIe slot according to its version, then reconnect the backplane SAS cables to the same connectors they came from. When a failed H740P is replaced, the existing arrays are detected as a foreign configuration and can be imported from the system setup utility or iDRAC without rebuilding. After boot, bring the controller firmware to the level used across your other 14G hosts through the Lifecycle Controller and check that the cache reports as healthy before enabling write-back.

Ask on WhatsApp sales@serverdove.comWhat is the difference between the PERC H740P and the H730P?
The H730P is a PERC 9 controller with 2GB of cache, used mainly in 13th generation PowerEdge servers. The H740P is the PERC 10 successor for 14th generation systems, based on the Broadcom SAS3508 chip with 8GB of DDR4 non-volatile cache. Both run 12Gb/s SAS, but the larger cache on the H740P gives more headroom for write-heavy and parity RAID workloads.
How does the H740P differ from the H840?
Both are PERC 10 controllers with 8GB of cache. The H740P has internal connections for the drives in the server's own backplane, while the H840 has external ports for attaching SAS disk enclosures such as PowerVault expansion shelves. Choose the H740P for drives inside the chassis and the H840 for external JBODs.
Can the H740P run drives in HBA or pass-through mode?
Yes. The controller supports non-RAID drives, which present individual disks directly to the operating system. This can be mixed with hardware RAID virtual disks on the same card, for example a RAID 1 boot mirror alongside pass-through drives for VMware vSAN, Storage Spaces Direct or ZFS, subject to each platform's own support requirements.
Which RAID levels does the PERC H740P support?
It supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. RAID 6 and 60 use dual parity and tolerate two drive failures per span, which suits large-capacity hard drive arrays where rebuild times are long. Dedicated and global hot spares can be assigned so rebuilds start automatically after a failure.
Does the H740P work with SATA drives and SSDs?
Yes. Alongside 12Gb/s SAS drives it supports 6Gb/s SATA, and both hard disks and solid state drives are supported. SAS and SATA drives are normally kept in separate virtual disks, and SATA drives run at 6Gb/s regardless of the controller's SAS link speed.
What does the 8GB non-volatile cache do?
The cache buffers reads and writes between the server and the drives. Because it is flash-backed, cached write data is preserved if power is lost, so write-back caching can be left on without risking corruption. This matters most for RAID 5 and 6, where write-back caching substantially reduces the penalty of parity calculation.
How is the PERC H740P managed?
On PowerEdge servers the controller is configured through the system setup utility at boot and through iDRAC, and can also be managed from the operating system with Dell OpenManage Server Administrator or the PERC CLI tool. These cover creating virtual disks, setting cache policies, assigning hot spares and monitoring drive health.
Is the H740P available in different form factors?
Dell produced the H740P in more than one form factor, including a mini monolithic version that sits in a dedicated slot on PowerEdge motherboards and an adapter card for standard PCIe slots. Check the Dell part number against the server's configuration to confirm the version needed before ordering.
What does refurbished mean at ServerDove?
Off-lease or decommissioned enterprise hardware that we clean, test and reset in Doha. Every unit goes through POST, burn-in, memory and drive checks and a power-supply check, with firmware and BIOS returned to defaults and drives securely erased.
