Chassis and platform

The R630 was Dell's mainstream 1U server for the E5-2600 v3 and v4 era, and it remains common in racks across the region. Its 24 DIMM slots and dual socket layout give it the same memory ceiling as the 2U R730, in a chassis built for density rather than expansion.

What you need to add

With power supplies and heatsinks already in place, the shopping list for this unit is shorter than for most barebones. Processors, memory and drives complete the build.

• One or two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors; v4 parts need a BIOS that supports them, which any current R630 firmware does
• DDR4 ECC Registered DIMMs, in matched sets of four per processor to use all four memory channels
• 2.5 inch SAS or SATA drives in Dell 13th generation hot-plug caddies
• A PERC RAID controller or HBA, unless the chassis already carries one
• Additional network cards if two onboard ports are not enough

Mixing v3 and v4 processors in the same server is not supported, so buy a matched pair. Memory speed follows the processor: v4 CPUs run RDIMMs at up to 2400 MT/s, v3 CPUs at up to 2133 MT/s.

The model name and chassis variant identify this unit. The ten bay layout is written both as "10SFF" and "10 SFF" in Dell documentation and in buyer searches.
