It takes two Intel Xeon Scalable processors in LGA3647 sockets and DDR4 ECC registered memory. The front bays accept SAS, SATA or NVMe drives, and iDRAC9 handles remote management. It is supplied as a barebone, with no CPU, no RAM and no drives fitted. The 10 SFF chassis is the densest front storage layout the R640 offers, alongside the 8 x 2.5 inch and 4 x 3.5 inch versions. The front bays take Dell 14th generation 2.5 inch drive carriers; carriers from 12th and 13th generation PowerEdge servers do not fit. Memory must be DDR4 ECC registered or load-reduced, and the installed processors set the maximum memory speed. Both processors must be the same model and stepping in a dual-socket build.
