Two-post telecom-style racks do not give the rear support a sliding rail needs to hold an extended server, so a different mounting solution is used there.
Specification
The R640 is a 1U chassis, so a server on these rails occupies a single rack unit and R640s can be stacked directly above one another. A sliding rail carries the server while it is extended, which needs support at both the front and rear posts; that is why the kit is for four-post racks.
Installation
Before installation day, measure the distance between the front and rear rack posts and check the rack's hole type, because mounting differs between rack designs. The outer rails latch onto the front and rear posts without screwdrivers, and the inner rails clip onto the sides of the R640 chassis. With both outer rails latched at the same rack unit on each side, align the inner rails with the outer rails and slide the server in until it locks. Lifting a loaded server onto rails is safer with two people. Leave enough slack in the power and network cables at the rear so the server can be drawn forward for service without pulling connections.
