This refurbished Dell PowerEdge R740 (SKU SRV-DELL-R740-16SFF-BARE) is the 16SFF version of Dell's 14th generation 2U rack server, introduced in 2017. The front carries 16 x 2.5 inch SFF hot-plug bays for SAS, SATA or NVMe drives, and the board takes two Intel Xeon Scalable processors in LGA3647 sockets with DDR4 ECC registered memory. It is supplied as a barebone with no RAM, no drives and no operating system, and iDRAC9 handles remote management. Buyers in Qatar choose an R740 barebone when they want to specify the processors, memory and storage themselves, or reuse components they already own. Both power supplies must be the same wattage, or iDRAC9 reports a mismatch and redundancy is lost. NVMe drives need an NVMe-capable backplane and cabling, so check the backplane before buying NVMe drives. Memory speed is set by the slowest DIMM and by the processor generation. Update the BIOS and iDRAC9 firmware before fitting second generation Xeon Scalable processors.

The R740 belongs to Dell's 14th generation of PowerEdge servers and supports both the first and second generation of Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Memory speed depends on the processor fitted: second generation chips run DDR4 at up to 2933 MT/s, first generation chips at up to 2666 MT/s.
What you need to add
A barebone needs its core components before it will boot. Plan the build around the workload: memory capacity for virtualisation, drive count and type for storage, processor cores for compute.
- One or two Intel Xeon Scalable processors (first or second generation) with matching heatsinks. A single processor works, but only half the memory slots and some PCIe slots are active.
- DDR4 ECC registered memory (RDIMM or LRDIMM). Populate evenly across both processors and do not mix RDIMM with LRDIMM.
- 2.5 inch SAS, SATA or NVMe drives, each in a Dell 14th generation hot-plug carrier.
- A storage controller (PERC RAID or HBA) suited to your drives, if one is not already fitted.
- Power supplies and C13 or C19 power cords to suit the wattage you choose.
- Rack rails, if your cabinet does not already have a set for the R740.
