The Dell Precision T7920, sold by Dell as the Precision 7920 Tower, is the dual-socket model at the top of the Precision tower range introduced in 2017. This refurbished barebone is the tower chassis and dual-processor platform with no processors, memory or drives fitted. It takes up to two Intel Xeon Scalable processors in LGA3647 sockets, DDR4 ECC Registered memory across 24 DIMM slots, PCIe 3.0 add-in cards, and NVMe or SATA SSDs and hard drives. Buyers in Qatar usually choose it to build an engineering, CAD, rendering or virtualisation workstation around processors and memory they already own, or to replace a failed T7920 chassis while keeping the existing components. WS-DELL-T7920-BAREWill it fit my system?
The platform accepts standard server-class components of the Xeon Scalable generation. Desktop parts such as unbuffered non-ECC memory or LGA1151 processors will not fit or will not run.

Do not mix Registered DIMMs with other memory types in the same system. Keep DIMM size and speed consistent within each processor's bank, and mirror the layout across both processors in a dual configuration. Faster DIMMs will run at the speed the installed processor supports. Large PCIe graphics cards need suitable auxiliary power connections, so check the power cabling in the chassis before ordering a high-wattage card.
Chassis and platform
The T7920 belongs to the Intel Xeon Scalable generation of workstations. It launched with first-generation Xeon Scalable processors and was later updated to accept the second generation, both of which use the same LGA3647 socket. Each processor has six memory channels, which is why the board carries 24 DIMM slots.
What you need to add
The barebone needs processors, memory, storage and a graphics card before it will run as a workstation. Plan the parts list as a set so the processors and memory match.
- One or two Intel Xeon Scalable processors (LGA3647). For a dual configuration, fit two identical processors with the same model and stepping.
- A correct heatsink and fan assembly for each populated socket.
- DDR4 ECC Registered DIMMs, populated evenly across the six channels of each processor for full memory bandwidth.
- Boot and data storage: an NVMe SSD for the operating system and active projects, with SATA SSDs or hard drives for bulk capacity.
- A PCIe graphics card, since Xeon Scalable processors have no integrated graphics.
- An operating system licence.
With a single processor fitted, only the 12 DIMM slots attached to that processor are usable, along with the PCIe lanes it controls. If you expect to add a second processor later, buy memory in a size and speed you can repeat for the second bank. Update the BIOS once the system first boots, particularly when fitting second-generation Xeon Scalable processors.
