The FortiGate 40F is Fortinet's entry-level desktop next generation firewall from the F-series, offered here as a refurbished unit under SKU FW-FORTIGATE-40F. It is built around Fortinet's SoC4 security processor, which offloads firewall and IPsec VPN processing from the main CPU, so a small box keeps its throughput when IPS and web filtering are switched on. This unit has 5 x Gigabit RJ45 ports and runs FortiOS, the same operating system used across the larger FortiGate range, so policies, objects and VPN settings follow the same model as a head office appliance. IT teams in Doha and across Qatar use the 40F as the perimeter firewall for a small office, as a branch firewall on a site-to-site VPN back to a larger FortiGate, or for a shop, clinic or site office that needs secure remote access for a handful of users. Installation
Place the 40F on a shelf or desk with clear space around the casing, as it cools passively and has no fan. Connect the upstream link from the ISP router or ONT to the port labelled WAN, and the office switch to one of the internal ports. After a factory reset the internal ports answer on 192.168.1.99 by default, so set a laptop to the same subnet and open the web interface over HTTPS. Change the administrator password, set the WAN addressing, then build firewall policies, security profiles and VPN tunnels before moving live traffic across. If the site already runs FortiGate units, the configuration can be pushed from FortiManager or adapted from an existing branch backup.
