The FortiGate 50E (our SKU FW-FORTIGATE-50E) is a refurbished Fortinet desktop firewall from the entry-level E-series range, running the FortiOS security platform. It provides 7 Gigabit Ethernet ports, next generation firewall inspection with IPS, antivirus and web filtering, and integrated VPN for remote users and site-to-site links. It is a compact unit that sits on a desk or shelf rather than in a rack, so it suits offices without a server room. The throughput and session figures are Fortinet's published values for the 50E. Firewall throughput is the raw packet-filtering rate; the IPsec VPN figure is the one to use when sizing site-to-site links, and real throughput falls further once IPS, antivirus and web filtering are all applied to the same traffic.
The two WAN ports allow a primary and a backup internet circuit, with FortiOS handling failover or load balancing between them. The five internal ports can act as a single switched LAN or be split into separate interfaces for guest, staff and device networks.
Installation
Place the unit on a flat surface with clear space around the vents, away from direct heat. Connect the internet circuit to a WAN port and the office network to the internal switch ports, then power the unit from its external adapter. Initial setup is done through the FortiOS web interface from a laptop on an internal port, or through the CLI. Reset the unit to factory defaults before deployment so no previous policies, addresses or VPN settings carry over, then update FortiOS to a release supported on the 50E before building policy. When replacing an existing 50E, a configuration backup from the old unit can usually be restored directly, because the port layout is the same.
