This is a 146GB 15,000 rpm SAS 6Gb/s hard drive in the 2.5 inch small form factor, supplied already mounted in an HPE drive caddy, so it goes straight into the hot-plug bay of a ProLiant server. The 146GB 15K drive was the standard fast boot and database drive of ProLiant G6, G7 and Gen8 servers, and the caddy is the part that is often missing when a bare replacement is bought. It is refurbished and sold with the caddy included. Buyers in Qatar use it to replace a failed drive in an older ProLiant array, or to add a mirrored boot pair to a refurbished server, without hunting for a carrier separately. The caddy is the HPE SmartDrive carrier or its predecessor, depending on the generation of the server the drive came from; both carry the drive in a G6 to Gen10 SFF bay, though the two carrier styles are not interchangeable with each other, so match the caddy style to the server's other drives. At 15K rpm the drive offers the fastest access time of any mechanical drive, which is what these bays were designed for.

Keep the caddy when the drive is eventually retired: HPE carriers are reused across drive replacements, and an SSD in the same carrier is the natural successor to a 15K drive in a boot bay.
Installation
With the server running, open the bay's blank or remove the failed drive by releasing its latch, slide this drive and caddy in until the lever clicks home, and watch the drive LED: the Smart Array controller recognises the drive and begins rebuilding a degraded logical drive automatically. A 146GB rebuild finishes in under an hour. For a new logical drive, use the controller's configuration utility to create it from matching drives.

What does refurbished mean at ServerDove?
Off-lease or decommissioned enterprise hardware that we clean, test and reset in Doha. Every unit goes through POST, burn-in, memory and drive checks and a power-supply check, with firmware and BIOS returned to defaults and drives securely erased.
