The HP Z420 is the single processor workstation of HP's DDR3 generation Z series. Its one LGA2011 socket takes an Intel Xeon E5-1600 v1 or v2 processor for clock speed or an E5-2600 v1 or v2 for cores, with eight DIMM slots for DDR3 ECC Registered memory, PCIe 3.0 slots for a full length graphics card, and SATA and SAS storage support. It is supplied with no CPU, no RAM and no storage. The Z420 is the least expensive way to put a proper workstation with ECC memory and a certified graphics slot on a desk. Buyers in Qatar use this refurbished chassis for CAD seats, laboratory instruments, small render nodes and any role where a business desktop is not enough and a dual socket tower is more than needed. Chassis and platform
The Z420 shares its tool-less chassis design with the larger Z series towers but on a single socket board with a 600 W class power supply. The platform below is the workstation as HP built it.
What you need to add
Processors and memory for the Z420 are DDR3 generation LGA2011 parts, the same as 12th generation servers use, and are inexpensive. The E5-1600 series is the natural workstation choice for its higher clock speeds.
- One Intel Xeon E5-1600 v1 or v2, or E5-2600 v1 or v2, processor with the Z420 heatsink
- DDR3 ECC Registered DIMMs, four to fill every memory channel, eight to fill the chassis
- A professional graphics card in the PCIe 3.0 x16 slot
- A SATA SSD for the operating system and SATA or SAS drives for data
- An operating system licence
v2 processors need Z420 system firmware from 2013 or later. DDR3 memory runs at up to 1600 MT/s with v1 and 1866 MT/s with v2 processors.
