The HP Z820 is the top dual socket model in HP's first Z workstation generation, launched in 2012 for the Intel Xeon E5-2600 platform. This refurbished barebone supplies the tower chassis and dual LGA2011 system board with no processor, memory or storage fitted. It accepts one or two Xeon E5-2600 v1 or v2 processors, takes DDR3 ECC Registered memory, and offers PCIe 3.0 expansion with SATA and SAS storage support. Processor support is limited to the Xeon E5-2600 v1 and v2 families in LGA2011. Later Xeon generations use a different socket and do not fit this board. Memory must be DDR3 ECC Registered; DDR4 modules will not fit. Do not mix module sizes or ranks within a channel, and keep the same module type across the whole system. The integrated controller accepts both SATA and SAS drives, so existing SAS disks from a retired workstation or server can be reused alongside standard SATA drives.
Chassis and platform
The Z820 is a first generation Z workstation on the Xeon E5-2600 platform. Each processor has its own four memory channels and eight DIMM slots, so the full 16 slots and the 512 GB maximum are only available with both sockets populated.
What you need to add
The barebone arrives without processor, memory or drives. Plan the build around the following parts.
- One or two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v1 or v2 processors. For a dual processor build, use two identical models.
- A processor heatsink for each populated socket.
- DDR3 ECC Registered DIMMs, installed in matched sets across the four channels of each processor.
- SATA or SAS drives for the operating system and data, with drive carriers for the internal bays.
- A graphics card in a PCIe 3.0 slot, chosen for the applications the workstation will run.
Update the system BIOS to a current HP release before fitting v2 processors, because early Z820 firmware supports v1 only. Populate the first slot of each channel first and fill channels evenly for full memory bandwidth. Memory attached to the second socket is only usable when a second processor is fitted.
