HPE part 876939-002 is the 2.4TB member of HPE's 10K SAS small form factor line, the largest capacity available at 10,000 rpm in a 2.5 inch drive. It runs on a 12Gb/s SAS interface, supports hot-plug in ProLiant SFF bays and is recognised by Smart Array controllers as an HPE drive, keeping health monitoring and firmware management intact. It is refurbished and sold as a bare drive. Buyers in Qatar use the 2.4TB drive to get performance and capacity from the same bays: eight of them in RAID 10 give a Gen9 or Gen10 server nearly 10TB of 10K storage for virtual machines or a busy file server. A 2.4TB 10K drive uses 4K physical sectors with 512 byte emulation, which every current Smart Array controller handles, and a rebuild of a full drive takes several hours, so RAID 6 or RAID 10 with a spare is the right protection for a set of them. Sequential throughput is above 200 megabytes per second per drive, and the 12Gb/s interface avoids any bottleneck on the backplane when eight or more share an expander.
The 2.4TB drive also serves as the capacity tier in a mixed array alongside SSDs: a common Gen10 layout is two SSDs mirrored for the operating system and hot data with six of these in RAID 6 for bulk storage, all on the same Smart Array controller and all in the front eight bays of a 1U server.
Installation
Fit the drive into an HPE SmartDrive carrier, which is not included, and insert it into a running ProLiant; the controller identifies it and rebuilds a degraded logical drive automatically, or the drive can be assigned as a spare or a new array member in Smart Storage Administrator. Match the part number across an array where possible, and apply HPE's drive firmware updates through the server's service pack so all members run the same level.
