The DL160 Gen9 is HPE's density-focused 1U two-socket server from the Gen9 generation. It is built on two LGA2011-3 sockets for the Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and v4 families, with DDR4 ECC Registered memory, PCIe 3.0 expansion, SAS and SATA drive support and integrated iLO 4 remote management. The DL160 Gen9 belongs to HPE's ProLiant Gen9 generation, launched in 2014 on the Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 platform and later extended to E5-2600 v4. Memory speed depends on the processor fitted, so quote the processor generation when planning DIMMs.
What you need to add
The chassis arrives empty of processors, memory and drives, so the build list starts with those. Fit one processor to start, or two matched processors for full memory and expansion capacity. E5-2600 v4 processors need a current system ROM, so update firmware with a v3 processor fitted if the board is on an early ROM. Memory slots belonging to the second socket only work when the second processor is installed.
- One or two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors, identical model and stepping when two are fitted
- DDR4 ECC Registered DIMMs, populated evenly across both processors and in matching sizes
- SAS or SATA drives, hard disk or SSD, in the size that matches the chassis bays (3.5 inch LFF or 2.5 inch SFF)
- Drive carriers for each populated bay
- A SAS-capable PCIe RAID controller if you plan to use SAS drives, as the embedded controller handles SATA only
- Rack rails and an operating system licence for the intended workload
Compatibility
Parts for this chassis must be Gen9 era components. DDR4 Registered memory is required, and older DDR3 modules from Gen8 servers will not fit. Gen9 servers use SmartDrive carriers, so Gen8 and earlier carriers are not interchangeable. Drives must match the bay size of the chassis variant. Memory runs at the lowest speed supported by the processor and DIMMs fitted, so mixing speeds gives no benefit.
