The Smart Array P408i-a SR is HPE's mainstream integrated RAID controller for ProLiant Gen10 servers, mounting in the dedicated storage slot of the DL360 Gen10 and DL380 Gen10 rather than a PCIe slot. It provides a 12Gb/s SAS interface for SAS and SATA drives, 2GB of flash backed write cache and RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60, and it requires the HPE Smart Storage battery to enable its cache. It is the controller ServerDove fits to its own assembled DL380 Gen10 servers, and it is refurbished. Specification
Gen10 controllers run in mixed mode, presenting RAID logical drives and pass-through disks at the same time, which suits hypervisors that manage some disks directly. The 2GB cache with flash backing lets write-back caching run safely once the Smart Storage battery is fitted and charged; without the battery the controller works in write-through mode and RAID 5 writes are slow. Eight internal lanes over two connectors serve one 8SFF cage, and an expander is needed for sixteen or more bays.
Installation
Power the server down and unplug it. Seat the card in the dedicated slot on the system board, secure its retaining screw, connect the two SAS cables from the backplane, and make sure a Smart Storage battery is fitted and connected in the chassis. Boot, update the controller firmware through HPE's service pack, wait for the battery to charge, and create logical drives in Smart Storage Administrator.
