The Smart Array P440ar is HPE's mainstream integrated RAID controller for ProLiant Gen9 servers: a card that fits the dedicated storage slot of the DL360 Gen9 and DL380 Gen9 rather than a PCIe slot, with a 12Gb/s SAS interface for SAS and SATA drives, 1GB of cache with flash backed write cache support, and RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. It is the controller ServerDove fits to its own assembled DL360 Gen9 and StoreEasy servers, and it is offered here refurbished. Buyers in Qatar fit the P440ar to a Gen9 barebone or to a server delivered with only the embedded software RAID, which has no cache, and gain proper hardware RAID for databases, virtual machines and storage duty. Specification
Flash backed write cache is what makes the P440ar a real RAID controller: writes are acknowledged from the cache and flushed to flash on power loss, which needs the separate Smart Storage battery to be present and healthy. The controller has eight internal lanes over two connectors, enough for the eight bay cage of a DL360 Gen9 or one cage of a DL380 Gen9, and it supports HBA mode for software defined storage. It also runs 12Gb/s SSDs at full speed.
Installation
Power the server down and unplug it. The card seats in the dedicated slot on the system board and is held by its retaining screw; connect the two SAS cables from the backplane and the cache battery cable if the chassis routes one to the controller. Boot, update the controller firmware through HPE's service pack, check that iLO shows the Smart Storage battery healthy, and create logical drives in Smart Storage Administrator.

What does refurbished mean at ServerDove?
