The Xeon E5-2609 v3 is the entry processor of Intel's E5 v3 family, the Haswell generation for the LGA2011-3 socket. It has six cores without Hyper-Threading, a fixed 1.90GHz clock with no Turbo Boost, 15MB of Smart Cache and an 85W thermal rating, and it supports DDR4 memory at 1600 MT/s. It is compatible with the Dell PowerEdge R630 and R730 and with HPE Gen9 servers. Specification
Note the absence of Hyper-Threading and turbo: six cores means six threads, and the clock never rises above 1.90GHz. Memory speed is limited to 1600 MT/s regardless of the DIMMs fitted.
Do not judge it by the clock alone. As a second processor its value is structural: it brings the second set of memory channels, another 40 PCIe lanes and the slots wired to socket two, which is often the only reason a server needs it. As a sole processor it is enough for a file server, a backup target or a firewall, and it draws little power doing so.
Installation
Fitting is straightforward on any v3 capable board, since no firmware update is required for the launch generation. Pair it only with another E5-2609 v3 in a dual socket server; a v3 and v4 processor will not run together. Use fresh thermal compound and a standard heatsink; the 85W rating does not need the high performance type. Expect memory to train at 1600 MT/s even with faster DIMMs.
