The Xeon E5-2643 is the high clock four core of Intel's original E5 family for the LGA2011 socket, the Sandy Bridge generation with DDR3 memory. It runs a 3.30GHz base and 3.50GHz turbo with 10MB of cache and a 130W rating, and supports PCIe 3.0. It was built for workstations and licensed-per-core servers of its day, where a few fast cores beat many slow ones. Buyers in Qatar fit the refurbished 2643 to 12th generation Dell, HPE Gen8 and Z series workstations of the DDR3 era, either to replace a failed part or to give an older workstation running single threaded software the fastest clock its socket allows. A 130W rating on four cores tells the story: this processor spends its power budget on clock speed. It needs the heatsink of a 130W part even though it has only four cores.
Turbo Boost adds only 200MHz over the base clock, so the processor runs close to its maximum speed all the time rather than relying on bursts, which suits sustained engineering calculations. Hyper-Threading doubles the four cores to eight threads for lighter background tasks.
Its uses today are specific: CAD and engineering seats on LGA2011 workstations, instrument controllers whose software is locked to a hardware generation, and licence bound servers where four fast cores keep costs down. For general server duty the v2 parts of the same socket with more cores are the better choice.
Installation
The E5-2643 fits any LGA2011 board of the DDR3 generation and needs no firmware beyond what shipped with v1 support. Release the two socket levers, place the processor with its notches aligned, close the levers, apply thermal compound and fit a heatsink rated for 130W. In a dual socket workstation both processors must be the same model. Memory is DDR3 ECC Registered, four channels per socket, and runs at up to 1600 MT/s.
