The Xeon E5-2682 v4 is an OEM member of Intel's E5 v4 family that was never sold at retail, which is why it is an unusually good value on the refurbished market: sixteen cores and 32 threads at a 2.50GHz base and 3.40GHz turbo, with 40MB of cache, DDR4-2400 support and a 120W rating, in the LGA2011-3 socket. It is named as compatible with the Dell PowerEdge R630 and R730 and with HPE Gen9 servers. Specification
The specification reads like a retail sixteen core part with a slightly different clock, which is what it is; Intel built it for a large cloud customer, and surplus stock reached the open market.
Thirty two threads per socket with 40MB of cache suits virtualisation, container hosts and web tiers, where many small tasks run at once. The 2.50GHz base is higher than most sixteen core parts of the generation, so it does not sacrifice single thread speed for its core count. Two per server gives 64 threads on 13th generation hardware.
Installation
Because it is a v4 part, the server must run firmware with v4 support, generally a 2016 or later BIOS; some OEM processors also need a recent microcode update to report correctly, so update to the latest release available. Fit two of the same model for a dual socket server, use fresh thermal compound and a 120W or better heatsink, and check the memory trains at 2400 MT/s after boot.
