Specification
The 160W rating is the constraint: not every server chassis cools a processor this hot, and the heatsink must be the high performance type where the vendor offers one.
Compared with the twelve core server parts of the same generation, the W model gives up nothing in cores and adds roughly 600MHz of base clock, which shows directly in CAD, finite element and single threaded rendering tasks. In a dual socket workstation two of these give 24 cores at 3.00GHz, a combination that still competes with far newer desktop processors on sustained multi-core work.
Installation
Update the system firmware to a v4 capable release before fitting, and in a dual socket machine use two identical E5-2687W v4 processors. Remove the old heatsink, clean both surfaces, apply a thin layer of thermal compound and fit a heatsink rated for 160W; the standard heatsink of a 1U server is usually not enough. After power on, check that fan speeds settle and that both processors report the same stepping.
