The Xeon Gold 6148 is the faster twenty core of Intel's first generation Xeon Scalable Gold series: the same 20 cores, 40 threads and 27.5MB cache as the 6138, but a 2.40GHz base instead of 2.00GHz, at a 150W rating in the LGA3647 socket. It supports six channels of DDR4-2666 and PCIe 3.0, and is named as compatible with the Dell PowerEdge R640, R740 and R840. It was the processor of choice for high performance computing clusters of its generation. Specification
The extra 400MHz of base clock over the 6138 costs 25W, so the 6148 needs the high performance heatsink in a 1U chassis where the 6138 uses the standard one.
Forty threads with a 2.40GHz base is a strong combination for simulation, rendering and analytics, where both parallel throughput and per thread speed matter. Two per server gives 80 threads at 2.40GHz, and the 27.5MB cache per processor keeps large working sets close to the cores.
Installation
Assemble the processor into its carrier and onto a 150W rated heatsink, lower the assembly onto the LGA3647 socket and tighten the screws in the numbered order. No firmware update is needed on a first generation server. Check the chassis fan configuration: Dell specifies additional fans for 150W processors in some 1U configurations. Pair only with another 6148 and fill all six memory channels per socket.
