Intel Xeon Gold 6230 20-core 2.10 GHz LGA3647 processor for 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable servers such as PowerEdge R640 and R740.
The Intel Xeon Gold 6230 is a 20-core, 40-thread processor from Intel's 2nd Generation Xeon Scalable family, code name Cascade Lake, launched in 2019 for the LGA3647 (FCLGA3647) socket of the Purley platform. It runs at 2.10 GHz base and up to 3.90 GHz turbo, with 27.5 MB of shared cache, six DDR4-2933 memory channels and a 125 W TDP. It scales to four sockets, so the same chip suits dual-socket nodes such as the Dell PowerEdge R640 and R740 and the four-socket R840. We supply the Gold 6230 refurbished from Doha, under stock code CPU-INTEL-XEON-6230, to IT teams in Qatar who are replacing a failed processor, populating an empty second socket or refreshing lower-core Skylake or Silver parts in Dell PowerEdge 14th generation and HPE ProLiant Gen10 servers. The chassis, motherboard and memory type stay the same, provided the BIOS supports Cascade Lake.
CPU-INTEL-XEON-6230Will it fit my system?
The 6230 fits Purley-platform servers with LGA3647 sockets. Servers that originally shipped with Skylake processors may need a BIOS update before they will recognise a Cascade Lake chip.
| Server | Generation | Note |
|---|---|---|
| PowerEdge R640 | Dell 14th generation | 1U, dual socket; 125 W fits its cooling budget |
| PowerEdge R740 | Dell 14th generation | 2U, dual socket |
| PowerEdge R740xd | Dell 14th generation | 2U, dual socket |
| PowerEdge R840 | Dell 14th generation | Four socket, up to 80 cores and 160 threads |
| ProLiant DL360 Gen10 | HPE Gen10 | 1U, dual socket |
| ProLiant DL380 Gen10 | HPE Gen10 | 2U, dual socket |
Every populated socket must hold an identical processor, matching model and stepping. A 6230 will not run alongside a 6130, a Silver part or a 6230R.
Specification
Cascade Lake is the second generation of the Purley platform, so the 6230 uses the same LGA3647 socket as first generation Skylake Gold parts. Against the Gold 6130 it keeps the 2.10 GHz base clock and 125 W TDP but adds four cores, more cache, DDR4-2933 support and Deep Learning Boost.
Installation
Processors are not hot-plug: shut the server down, remove the power cords and let standby power drain before opening the chassis. Clip the 6230 into the processor carrier used by your platform, then seat the assembly on the socket with the heatsink specified for your chassis, since Dell and HPE use their own heatsink designs for 1U and 2U servers. Handle the processor by its edges and keep the socket cover on any empty socket, as LGA3647 pins bend easily. To add a second processor, use another Gold 6230; to change models, replace all processors together. Update the BIOS to a release that supports 2nd Generation Xeon Scalable before removing Skylake parts, and populate DIMMs according to the server's channel rules so that all six channels per processor are used.

Ask on WhatsApp sales@serverdove.comWhich servers is the Xeon Gold 6230 used in?
The Gold 6230 is an LGA3647 processor for Purley-platform servers. It is commonly installed in the Dell PowerEdge R640, R740, R740xd and the four-socket R840, as well as HPE ProLiant DL360 and DL380 Gen10 systems. Check that your server's BIOS supports 2nd Generation Xeon Scalable processors, as systems originally shipped with Skylake CPUs may need a firmware update first.
What is the difference between the Xeon Gold 6230 and the Gold 6230R?
The 6230R is a later refresh with 26 cores, 35.75MB of cache, a 4.0GHz turbo and a 150W TDP, but it is limited to two-socket systems. The standard 6230 offers 20 cores, 27.5MB of cache, a 3.90GHz turbo and a lower 125W TDP, and supports up to four sockets, making it suitable for quad-socket servers like the PowerEdge R840.
How does the Gold 6230 compare with the Gold 6130?
The Gold 6130 is a 1st Generation Scalable (Skylake) part with 16 cores, 22MB of cache and DDR4-2666 support. The Gold 6230 shares the same 2.10GHz base clock and 125W TDP but adds four cores, 27.5MB of cache, DDR4-2933 support, Deep Learning Boost and Optane Persistent Memory support, making it a straightforward upgrade in the same socket.
What memory does the Xeon Gold 6230 support?
It supports DDR4 registered and load-reduced DIMMs at speeds up to 2933MT/s across six memory channels per processor, with a maximum of 1TB of memory per socket. Slower DIMMs will run at their rated speed, and the actual memory speed achieved also depends on how many DIMMs are installed per channel in your particular server.
Can I mix the Gold 6230 with a different CPU in a dual-socket server?
No. Intel multi-socket systems require identical processors in every populated socket, matching model and stepping. If you are adding a second CPU to an existing Gold 6230 server, use another Gold 6230. If your server currently has a different model, replace all processors together so that the system will initialise correctly.
Does the Gold 6230 need a heatsink or anything else to install?
Yes. Like all LGA3647 processors, it must be mounted with a compatible heatsink and the processor carrier clip used by your server platform. Dell, HPE and other vendors use their own heatsink designs sized for 1U or 2U chassis, so use the heatsink specified for your server and a 125W-capable cooling configuration.
How many PCIe lanes does the Xeon Gold 6230 provide?
Each Gold 6230 provides 48 PCIe 3.0 lanes, so a dual-socket server has 96 CPU-attached lanes available. These feed the server's expansion slots, NVMe drive backplanes, onboard network controllers and RAID cards. How those lanes are distributed to physical slots depends on the specific server's motherboard and riser layout.

Enterprise hardware, tested in Doha, at a fraction of the price of new
Every unit we sell has already proven itself in a data centre. We test it again, grade it, and back it with a warranty before it leaves our stock.
Tested before it ships
POST, burn-in, memory and power-supply checks on every unit. Anything that fails is repaired or pulled from stock, not sold.
Same performance, lower cost
A Xeon runs the same workloads whether it is new or two years old. Spend the difference on more CPUs, memory or storage.
In stock, not on order
New enterprise hardware can take weeks or months to arrive. Ours is on the shelf in Doha and delivered across Qatar within a day.
Warranty and local support
Every unit is covered. Installation, configuration and hardware support are handled by our own team in Qatar, not a call centre abroad.
