The Xeon Gold 6242 is a sixteen core processor from Intel's second generation Xeon Scalable family, the Cascade Lake update for the LGA3647 socket. It balances core count and clock: sixteen cores and 32 threads at a 2.80GHz base and 3.90GHz turbo, 22MB of cache, six channels of DDR4-2933 and PCIe 3.0 at a 150W rating. Compared with the twenty core 6138 it gives up four cores for 800MHz of base clock and faster memory. Installation
Second generation processors require a server BIOS released in 2019 or later, so update the firmware before fitting. Assemble processor, carrier and heatsink, lower onto the socket and fasten in the marked order, using a heatsink rated for 150W. Never mix first and second generation parts in one server. Memory slower than 2933 MT/s runs at its own rating and sets the speed for the whole system.
