The Xeon Gold 6248 is the second generation successor to the 6148: twenty cores and 40 threads at a 2.50GHz base and 3.90GHz turbo, 27.5MB of cache and a 150W rating in the LGA3647 socket, with memory support raised to six channels of DDR4-2933. It carries the Cascade Lake improvements, hardware mitigations for the speculative execution flaws, deep learning instructions and Optane persistent memory support. It is named as compatible with the Dell PowerEdge R640, R740 and R840. Specification
Against the 6148 it gives 100MHz more base clock, 200MHz more turbo and 10 percent faster memory for the same power, plus the security fixes in hardware rather than in software patches that cost performance. That makes it the better buy for any server that will run current operating systems, and the processor to choose for virtualisation hosts and analytics nodes on the 14th generation platform.
Installation
The server must run a BIOS with second generation support, released in 2019; update before fitting or the system will not boot. Then mount the processor in its carrier on a 150W heatsink, lower onto the socket and tighten in the marked sequence. Do not mix with a first generation processor. Memory rated 2933 MT/s is needed to realise the faster memory speed; existing 2666 MT/s DIMMs work at their own rating.
