The Xeon Platinum 8160 is a 24 core processor from the top tier of Intel's first generation Xeon Scalable family. It offers 48 threads at a 2.10GHz base and 3.70GHz turbo, 33MB of cache, six channels of DDR4-2666 memory and 48 PCIe 3.0 lanes at a 150W rating, in the LGA3647 socket. Two of them give a 14th generation Dell or Gen10 HPE server 48 cores and 96 threads, close to the maximum the platform allows. Buyers in Qatar choose the refurbished 8160 for consolidation: fewer, denser virtualisation hosts, large analytics jobs and in-memory databases where core count per socket is the deciding figure. In a two socket server the Platinum tier's extra interconnect links go unused, so the practical difference from a Gold part is the core count and the larger cache; the 8160 is bought for its 24 cores. At 150W it needs the high performance heatsink in most 1U chassis and the chassis must be rated for that wattage. Memory bandwidth per core is lower than on a twelve core part, so fill all six channels per socket.
Installation
A first generation server accepts the 8160 without a firmware change. Mount the processor in its carrier on a 150W rated heatsink, lower onto the LGA3647 socket and tighten in the marked order; check the fan configuration the vendor specifies for processors of this wattage, since some chassis need additional or higher speed fans. Pair only with an identical 8160.
