Intel Xeon Silver 4108, an 8 core, 16 thread LGA3647 processor at 1.80GHz with 3.00GHz turbo and an 85W rating, refurbished.
The Xeon Silver 4108 is the eight core entry processor of Intel's first generation Xeon Scalable family: eight cores and 16 threads at a 1.80GHz base and 3.00GHz turbo, 11MB of cache, six channels of DDR4-2400 and PCIe 3.0, at an 85W rating in the LGA3647 socket. It is the processor many 14th generation Dell and Gen10 HPE servers were sold with in their basic configurations. Buyers in Qatar use the refurbished 4108 for servers whose work is not processor bound, such as file, print, backup and management servers, and as an inexpensive matched second processor to bring a single socket server's remaining DIMM slots and PCIe slots into use. Eight cores at 85W is the efficient configuration of the first generation, and the figures below are the ones that matter when deciding whether to keep it or step up to a Gold part.
It is common as a replacement part because so many servers shipped with it: a failed 4108 is best replaced with another 4108 so the surviving processor keeps its match. It also suits a server destined for a storage or backup role, where the processor is rarely the limit and the saving over a Gold part is better spent on drives.
The low base clock is the compromise for the low power and low cost, and turbo to 3.00GHz on lightly threaded work softens it. Sixteen threads with six memory channels is still a capable small virtualisation host for a handful of light machines. Memory speed is capped at 2400 MT/s on the Silver 4100 parts, so there is no benefit in buying 2666 MT/s DIMMs for a server that will keep this processor.
Installation
Fit as any first generation LGA3647 processor: carrier, heatsink, socket, screws in the marked order, with the standard heatsink adequate at 85W and no BIOS update required. As a second processor it must match the first exactly. After boot, confirm the BIOS shows both processors and that the DIMM slots belonging to the new socket are now populated and recognised.
