The Micron MTA18ASF4G72PZ-2G9 is a 32GB DDR4 registered ECC DIMM rated at 2933MT/s, carrying the JEDEC designation PC4-2933Y. It is a single-rank 1Rx4 module built from eighteen 16Gb x4 DRAM chips, made for Intel Xeon Scalable servers such as Dell PowerEdge 14th generation and HPE ProLiant Gen10 systems. DDR4-2933 is the native memory speed of second-generation Xeon Scalable (Cascade Lake). First-generation (Skylake) hosts run the same module at their own lower supported speed. RDIMMs cannot be mixed with LRDIMMs or unbuffered DIMMs in the same server. A dual-socket server with 24 slots reaches 768GB when fully populated with this module, and a single-socket system with 12 slots reaches 384GB. The module will not work in desktop boards that accept only unbuffered memory.
Specification
The 72-bit width is 64 bits of payload plus 8 bits of ECC, which is why the module carries eighteen chips rather than sixteen. At 2933MT/s each module offers a theoretical peak of roughly 23.4GB/s. The register buffers command and address lines, so a server can carry many DIMMs per channel without overloading the memory controller.
Installation
Memory is not hot-plug: shut the server down, disconnect the power cords and wait for standby power to drain before opening the chassis. Use an anti-static strap and handle the module by its edges, aligning the notch before pressing it down until both latches close. Populate in balanced sets, one module per channel on each processor first, so bandwidth stays even across channels. On some platforms a second DIMM per channel lowers the operating speed. Matching capacity, rank and speed across all installed modules keeps interleaving balanced and avoids memory warnings at boot.
