Toshiba 1.2TB SAS 10K 12Gbps enterprise hard drive in 512e format, a 2.5 inch performance drive for server RAID arrays, refurbished.
This Toshiba 1.2TB enterprise hard drive spins at 10,000 rpm on a 12Gbps SAS interface and uses the 512e sector format, in which 4K physical sectors are presented to the host as 512 byte sectors for compatibility with older controllers and operating systems. The 10K SAS 1.2TB drive is the standard performance drive of 13th and 14th generation servers, fitted in their 2.5 inch bays for operating systems, databases and virtual machines before flash took over. Buyers in Qatar use this refurbished drive to replace a failed member of a 10K SAS array like for like, or to fill the bays of a refurbished server with matched performance drives at low cost. The sector format matters when mixing drives in an array: 512e and 512n drives can share a RAID set on most controllers, but 4Kn drives cannot join a 512 byte set, so match the format of the existing members.
A 10K drive gives roughly twice the random performance of a 7.2K drive and about 200 megabytes per second sequential, which is why RAID 10 sets of these still serve databases and virtual machines well where flash is not justified. The 12Gbps interface is backward compatible with 6Gbps controllers.
Toshiba's enterprise 10K drives are found under Dell, HPE and Lenovo labels as well as their own, so this bare Toshiba drive is often the same mechanism as the vendor branded part at a lower cost. The vendor's controller may report it as a non-certified drive, which affects only the vendor's health monitoring, not RAID operation; buyers who need the server to recognise the drive as a vendor part should choose the vendor branded version instead.
Installation
Mount the drive in the 2.5 inch caddy of the target server, which is not included, and hot-plug it into the bay. The controller detects it within seconds; assign it to the degraded array or as a global hot spare from the RAID utility or the server's management interface. Expect a 1.2TB rebuild to take an hour or two under light load, and avoid heavy I/O on the array until it finishes.
