Dell 2.5 inch SFF hot-plug drive caddy, SKU CADDY-DELL-14G-SFF, for mounting SAS and SATA drives in 14th generation PowerEdge servers.
This is a 2.5 inch small form factor (SFF) hot-plug drive caddy for Dell's 14th generation (14G) PowerEdge servers, the Xeon Scalable platform Dell introduced in 2017. It fits the front 2.5 inch bays of the PowerEdge R640, R740, R740xd and R940, and holds one 2.5 inch SAS or SATA hard drive or SSD. PowerEdge servers do not accept bare drives. Every populated bay needs a carrier that lines the drive up with the backplane connector and latches it in place. Buyers are usually system administrators, resellers and data centre teams adding drives to bays fitted with blanks, replacing a cracked tray, or keeping spare carriers ready so a replacement drive is mounted before the failed one is pulled. Refurbished 14G servers often arrive with blanking panels in unused slots or with a tray damaged in transport, a common situation for IT teams in Doha and across Qatar rebuilding hosts for redeployment. The caddy does not change drive support. Whether a given drive works depends on the RAID controller and server firmware, not on the tray.
Specification
The caddy is sized for 2.5 inch drives only. A 3.5 inch drive will not mount in it, and servers built with 3.5 inch LFF bays need the 3.5 inch 14G carrier instead, so check the bay size on the front panel before ordering.
Installation
Place the drive in the caddy with its connector facing the rear and secure it with screws through the carrier mounting holes. Open the release handle, slide the caddy into the bay until it meets the backplane, then close the handle until it latches. The tray can be inserted or removed with the server running, but only pull a drive that belongs to a redundant RAID set or has first been taken offline in the controller or operating system. After fitting a replacement in a degraded array, check iDRAC or the PERC controller utility to see that the rebuild has started. Keep blanks in any bays left empty so front to back airflow is maintained.
