A drive caddy, also called a tray or carrier, holds a hard drive or SSD in a server's hot-plug bay. It aligns the drive with the backplane connector, locks it in place, and carries the status lights on the front. This range covers Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant caddies in 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch sizes, plus adapters that fit a 2.5-inch drive into a 3.5-inch bay.

It is for anyone adding drives to empty bays, replacing a damaged carrier, or fitting drives bought without one.

What decides the right caddy

  • Server maker. Dell and HPE caddies are different shapes and are not interchangeable.
  • Generation. Caddy designs change between server generations. A caddy from one generation may not latch in a bay from another.
  • Bay size. A 2.5-inch bay takes a 2.5-inch caddy. A 3.5-inch bay takes a 3.5-inch caddy, which can also hold a 2.5-inch drive with the right adapter.
  • Drive type. The same caddy usually takes SAS and SATA drives, since the connector is on the drive itself.

Filling a server

Empty bays on a new or barebone server are often closed with blanking panels rather than caddies. To add a drive to one of those bays, you need a caddy for each drive. Browse drives in SAS hard drives and solid-state drives, and other server hardware in parts and accessories.
