About SAS hard drives
SAS hard drives for Dell, HPE and other enterprise servers: 2.5-inch 10K and 15K drives for performance arrays and 3.5-inch 7.2K drives for capacity, held in Doha for delivery across Qatar.
SAS hard drives are the standard spinning drives for enterprise servers and storage arrays. This range covers 2.5-inch drives at 10K and 15K rpm for performance arrays, and 3.5-inch 7.2K drives for high capacity, from Dell, HPE, IBM, Seagate, HGST, Western Digital and Toshiba, many with the server maker's own firmware and part numbers.
It is for teams replacing a failed drive in an existing array, expanding a server, or filling a new chassis with capacity at a lower cost per terabyte than flash.

Choosing by speed and size

Where random performance matters more than capacity, compare SAS SSDs, which use the same controllers and bays.
What to check before ordering
- Controller and backplane. SAS drives need a SAS controller and backplane. A SATA-only system cannot use them.
- Form factor and caddy. The drive must match the bay, and it needs the right carrier for your server. See drive caddies.
- Matching an array. A replacement should match the capacity, speed and sector format of the drives already in the array.
- Vendor firmware. Drives with the server maker's firmware report health correctly to its management tools.
Send the server model or service tag, or the part number printed on a current drive, and the team will confirm the right replacement.

SAS Hard Drives: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SAS and SATA hard drives?
SAS drives are built for servers: they run on a 12Gb/s or 6Gb/s full-duplex link, support dual ports for storage arrays with two controllers, and are designed for continuous duty. SATA drives are cheaper per terabyte and suit bulk storage and backups. A SAS controller runs both types, but a SATA controller cannot run a SAS drive.
Can I use a 12Gb/s SAS drive in a 6Gb/s server?
Generally yes. SAS is backward compatible, so a 12Gb/s drive on a 6Gb/s controller runs at 6Gb/s. For hard drives the difference is small, since a spinning drive rarely fills a 6Gb/s link. The drive still needs the right form factor, caddy and a controller that supports its capacity, so send the server model and the team will confirm.
Should I choose 10K or 15K rpm?
15K drives have lower latency and suit older arrays built for transaction workloads. 10K drives offer more capacity per drive and are the common choice for virtualisation and general server arrays. For a replacement, match the speed of the drives already in the array. For a new build that needs speed, SAS SSDs usually outperform any hard drive.
Do I need the same brand of drive as my server?
Not always, but it helps. Drives with the server maker's firmware are recognised by its RAID controller and management tools, which report their health and can update their firmware. Some servers show warnings for drives without it. If you are replacing a drive in an existing array, send the part number from a current drive so the team can match it.
Are the drives supplied with a caddy?
Some listings include the caddy and say so in the title. Others are the bare drive. Caddies differ between server makers and generations, so if you need one, check the listing or add the right carrier from the drive caddies range. The team can confirm the correct caddy if you send the server model.
