How to Inspect a Refurbished Server Before You Buy: A Practical Checklist
"Refurbished" describes a process, not a guarantee. A properly refurbished server has been diagnosed, tested and verified component...
Dell PowerEdge R740 2U servers in Doha. Xeon Scalable, 24 DDR4 slots, 8 or 16 bays, PERC RAID, GPU-ready. 6-month warranty, 1-day delivery.
Refurbished Dell PowerEdge R740 2U rack servers, tested and stocked in Doha, with dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors, up to 24 DDR4 DIMM slots and 8 or 16 front drive bays, delivered across Qatar within a day.
The R740 is the 2U counterpart to the R640 in Dell's 14th-generation PowerEdge line, released in 2017. It carries the same dual Intel Xeon Scalable platform and 24 memory slots, but the taller chassis buys three things the 1U cannot offer: 3.5-inch drive bays, up to eight PCIe slots, and room for double-width GPUs. That makes it the default choice where a server has to hold a lot of storage or accelerators as well as compute: file and backup servers, virtualisation hosts with local datastores, database servers on 3.5-inch nearline SAS, and video or analytics workloads on GPUs. Refurbished, it delivers the same platform at a fraction of the price of a current-generation R750, and every part of it is still readily available.
The R740 was built in three front-bay configurations. As with the R640, the bay layout is fixed to the chassis and backplane, so it cannot be changed after purchase without replacing both. Rear drive bays and the 24-bay front are R740xd features, not R740.
| Chassis | Front bays | Drive types | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 x 3.5" | 8 | SAS, SATA | Bulk capacity on nearline SAS: file servers, backup targets, surveillance storage |
| 8 x 2.5" | 8 | SAS, SATA, SSD | General virtualisation where 2U is chosen for the PCIe slots rather than the drives |
| 16 x 2.5" | 16 | SAS, SATA, SSD, NVMe (up to 8 NVMe on the hybrid backplane) | Databases, VDI, mixed flash and disk tiers |

All three variants take the optional BOSS card with two M.2 SATA SSDs for a mirrored boot volume, keeping the front bays free for data.
The R740 accepts first-generation (Skylake-SP, 2017) and second-generation (Cascade Lake, 2019) Intel Xeon Scalable processors in two LGA3647 sockets, and unlike the R640 it supports the full 205 W thermal envelope in every chassis, so the top Platinum parts are an option. Both CPUs in a system must be identical. The lists below cover the SKUs most commonly found in refurbished R740 units.

Silver and Gold 5xxx processors cap memory at 2400 or 2666 MT/s regardless of the DIMMs fitted. If memory bandwidth matters to your workload, a Gold 6xxx or Platinum with second-generation silicon is the difference between 2400 and 2933 MT/s on the same board.
Twenty-four DDR4 DIMM slots, twelve per processor across six channels. Registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) modules are supported; they cannot be mixed in the same system. With one CPU installed, only the twelve slots on that side are usable.
| Module | Capacities | Maximum system memory |
|---|---|---|
| RDIMM | 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB | 1.5 TB with 24 x 64 GB |
| LRDIMM | 64 GB, 128 GB | 3 TB with 24 x 128 GB |
| Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory (second-gen CPUs only) | 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB | Up to 12 modules in mixed configurations |
For best performance populate all six channels per CPU in matched sets: 6, 12 or 24 DIMMs in total for a dual-CPU system. A single DIMM per CPU works but runs at a fraction of the available bandwidth. Memory runs at the lower of the DIMM rating and the CPU limit, so 2933 MT/s modules on a Silver 4214 run at 2400 MT/s.

Drive support depends on the backplane fitted at the factory. All backplanes are hot-plug. The controller options are:
| Controller | Type | Cache | RAID levels | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PERC H330 | Hardware RAID | None | 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 | Entry level; no write-back cache, so write-heavy RAID 5 is slow |
| PERC H730P | Hardware RAID | 2 GB NV | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | The common choice for virtualisation and database hosts |
| PERC H740P | Hardware RAID | 8 GB NV | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | Highest cache; best for large SSD arrays |
| HBA330 | Pass-through HBA | None | None (JBOD) | For software-defined storage: vSAN, Ceph, ZFS, Storage Spaces |
| PERC H840 | External RAID | 8 GB NV | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | PCIe card for external MD14xx disk shelves |
| BOSS-S1 | M.2 boot | None | 1 | Two M.2 SATA SSDs mirrored for the operating system |
Supported drive types are 12 Gb/s SAS and 6 Gb/s SATA in both hard disk and SSD form, plus U.2 NVMe on the 16-bay hybrid backplane. Drives need the correct Dell 14th-generation caddy: the 2.5" and 3.5" carriers are not interchangeable with 11th or 12th-generation trays, though they are the same parts used by the R640 and R940.

Onboard networking is provided by a Network Daughter Card (NDC) that slots into a dedicated connector rather than a PCIe slot. Common options:
Beyond the NDC, the R740 offers up to eight PCIe 3.0 slots across three risers with two processors installed, in a mix of full-height and low-profile. That is enough for a pair of Fibre Channel HBAs, a 25 GbE adapter and a RAID card at the same time. With the GPU-enabled riser configuration the chassis takes up to three double-width 300 W accelerators such as the NVIDIA Tesla V100 or P40, which is the main reason to choose an R740 over an R640 for analytics, rendering or inference workloads.
Two hot-plug redundant power supply bays, configured 1+1. Options are 495 W, 750 W, 1100 W, 1600 W, 2000 W and 2400 W, all 80 PLUS Platinum or Titanium. A dual-CPU system with a full memory load and sixteen drives sits comfortably within a 1100 W envelope; the 1600 W and above units are for GPU configurations. Both supplies in a system should be the same rating.
Every R740 includes iDRAC9 with a dedicated management port. The Express licence covers remote power, health monitoring and basic alerts; the Enterprise licence adds the virtual console, virtual media, remote firmware updates through the Lifecycle Controller and the full Redfish API, which is what most buyers actually want for a server in a rack they do not visit. Enterprise licences can be added to any unit. The R740 also supports OpenManage Enterprise for fleet management.

The R740 is on the certified hardware lists for:
Windows Server 2025 and ESXi 8 are outside Dell's support matrix for the R740 but run on it. Confirm your hypervisor's hardware compatibility list before buying if you need vendor support.
Every unit we sell has been through full hardware diagnostics and a burn-in run: memory tested across every installed DIMM, controller and drive health verified, both power supplies load-tested, and the iDRAC reset and confirmed reachable. BIOS is returned to defaults and the firmware brought to a stable release. Units carry a six-month warranty and are held in Doha, so a replacement part is a short drive away rather than a shipment from overseas.
Because the R740 is past its manufacturer support window, we are also the practical route to keeping one in service: we stock the caddies, PERC cards, NDCs, power supplies and rail kits that fit it, and our hardware support plans cover units bought elsewhere as well as our own.
If you need a specific configuration that is not listed, tell us the CPU, memory and drive layout you want and we will quote a build from stock. Custom configurations are usually ready within two working days.
Six months, covering parts and labour. Every unit goes through full hardware diagnostics and a burn-in run in our Doha workshop before it is listed, and warranty work is handled locally rather than shipped abroad.
Orders over QAR 300 are delivered across Qatar within one working day from our Doha stock. Larger installations can be scheduled with our installation service.
[VERIFY and edit: state exactly what ships with complete servers and with barebones. Example: Complete servers ship with the rail kit and a caddy in every populated bay; barebone chassis ship with blanks, and caddies and rails are listed separately on this page.]
Yes. A barebone R740 is a tested chassis with backplane, system board, fans and power supplies. Fit any supported processor pair and DDR4 ECC modules of the correct type and it is a working server. We stock matched CPU pairs and memory if you would rather have it built and tested before delivery.
[VERIFY and edit: state whether units ship with the entry licence or the full one. Example: Units ship with iDRAC9 Enterprise as delivered by the previous owner, which is usually the entry licence. The full licence can be added to any unit; ask us when ordering.]
Choose the R740 when you need 3.5-inch drives, more than three PCIe cards or a GPU; choose the R640 when rack space is the constraint and 2.5-inch drives are enough. They share processors, memory and caddies, so a mixed estate of both is easy to support.
12 Gb/s SAS and 6 Gb/s SATA hard drives and SSDs, plus U.2 NVMe on the 16-bay hybrid backplane, in the Dell 14th-generation 2.5" or 3.5" caddy. The same caddies fit the R640 and R940. We stock both sizes.
The R740xd is the storage-heavy variant: up to 24 front bays, rear and mid-chassis drive bays, and 3.5" options up to 12 front bays. The trade-off is fewer PCIe slots and no GPU support. For a plain compute or virtualisation host the R740 is the better buy.
Yes. The sockets are the same. Update the BIOS to a 2.x release first, then fit matching second-generation CPUs. Existing 2666 MT/s memory keeps working; the higher 2933 MT/s speed needs both a second-generation CPU and DIMMs rated for it.
Up to 1.5 TB with 64 GB RDIMMs, 3 TB with 128 GB LRDIMMs, and more with Intel Optane persistent memory on second-generation processors. All 24 slots are only available with both CPUs installed.
With the GPU riser configuration, up to three double-width cards at 300 W each, such as the NVIDIA V100, A30 or A40, or up to six single-width cards such as the T4. GPU builds need 1100 W or larger power supplies and the GPU enablement kit with its power cables. [VERIFY: which GPUs you have qualified in this chassis]
Only on the 16 x 2.5" NVMe-capable backplane, which takes up to eight U.2 NVMe drives in the designated bays alongside SAS and SATA. The 8 x 3.5" chassis does not support front NVMe, though a BOSS card still gives you M.2 SATA boot drives.
PERC H730P for most virtualisation and database hosts. PERC H740P if the array is mostly SSDs. HBA330 if you are running vSAN, Ceph, ZFS or Storage Spaces, which need direct disk access rather than hardware RAID. Avoid the H330 for write-heavy workloads because it has no cache.
Rack depth (allow around 800 mm including cabling), whether you need rails and a bezel, which chassis you need by drive count and type, whether you need the GPU riser, and the iDRAC licence level. If you are not sure, send us the workload and we will suggest a configuration.
