How to Inspect a Refurbished Server Before You Buy: A Practical Checklist
"Refurbished" describes a process, not a guarantee. A properly refurbished server has been diagnosed, tested and verified component...
Dell PowerEdge R640 1U servers in Doha. Xeon Scalable up to 28 cores, 24 DDR4 slots, 4 to 10 bays, PERC RAID. Tested, 6-month warranty, 1-day delivery across Qatar.
Refurbished Dell PowerEdge R640 1U rack servers, tested and stocked in Doha, with Intel Xeon Scalable processors, up to 24 DDR4 DIMM slots and 4, 8 or 10 drive bays, delivered across Qatar within a day.
The R640 is Dell's dual-socket 1U workhorse from the 14th generation PowerEdge line, released in 2017 and still one of the most widely deployed rack servers in the world. It packs two Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 24 memory slots and up to 10 hot-plug drives into a single rack unit, which is why it is the default choice for virtualisation hosts, database nodes, web tiers and anywhere rack density matters. Refurbished, it delivers the same platform at a fraction of the price of a current-generation equivalent, and every part of it, from rail kits to backplanes, is still readily available.
The R640 was built in three front-bay configurations. The chassis cannot be converted from one to another after purchase, so choose by how many drives you need and what type.
| Chassis | Front bays | Drive types | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 x 3.5" | 4 | SAS, SATA | Bulk capacity, backup targets, file servers |
| 8 x 2.5" | 8 | SAS, SATA, SSD | General virtualisation and application hosts |
| 10 x 2.5" | 10 | SAS, SATA, SSD, NVMe (up to 10 NVMe on the all-NVMe backplane, or 4 NVMe on the mixed backplane) | Databases, VDI, flash-heavy workloads |
All three variants support an optional BOSS card with two M.2 SATA SSDs for a mirrored boot volume, keeping the front bays free for data.
The R640 accepts first-generation (Skylake-SP, 2017) and second-generation (Cascade Lake, 2019) Intel Xeon Scalable processors in two LGA3647 sockets. Second-generation CPUs need a BIOS at 2.x or later and unlock 2933 MT/s memory. Both CPUs in a system must be identical. The list below covers the SKUs most commonly found in refurbished R640 units; the platform supports the full range up to 28 cores and 205 W.
| Processor | Cores | Base clock | TDP | Memory speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xeon Silver 4210 | 10 | 2.2 GHz | 85 W | 2400 MT/s |

| Xeon Platinum 8280 | 28 | 2.7 GHz | 205 W | 2933 MT/s |
| Processor | Cores | Base clock | TDP | Memory speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xeon Silver 4110 | 8 | 2.1 GHz | 85 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Silver 4114 | 10 | 2.2 GHz | 85 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Silver 4116 | 12 | 2.1 GHz | 85 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 5118 | 12 | 2.3 GHz | 105 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 5120 | 14 | 2.2 GHz | 105 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 6130 | 16 | 2.1 GHz | 125 W | 2666 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 6138 | 20 | 2.0 GHz | 125 W | 2666 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 6140 | 18 | 2.3 GHz | 140 W | 2666 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 6148 | 20 | 2.4 GHz | 150 W | 2666 MT/s |
| Xeon Platinum 8160 | 24 | 2.1 GHz | 150 W | 2666 MT/s |
| Xeon Platinum 8168 | 24 | 2.7 GHz | 205 W | 2666 MT/s |
| Xeon Platinum 8180 | 28 | 2.5 GHz | 205 W | 2666 MT/s |
Silver and Gold 5xxx processors cap memory at 2400 or 2666 MT/s regardless of the DIMMs fitted. If memory bandwidth matters to your workload, a Gold 6xxx or Platinum with second-generation silicon is the difference between 2400 and 2933 MT/s on the same board.
Twenty-four DDR4 DIMM slots, twelve per processor across six channels. Registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) modules are supported; they cannot be mixed in the same system. With one CPU installed, only the twelve slots on that side are usable.
| Module | Capacities | Maximum system memory |
|---|---|---|
| RDIMM | 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB | 1.5 TB with 24 x 64 GB |
| LRDIMM | 64 GB, 128 GB | 3 TB with 24 x 128 GB |
| Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory (second-gen CPUs only) | 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB | Up to 7.68 TB in mixed configurations |
For best performance populate all six channels per CPU in matched sets: 6, 12 or 24 DIMMs in total for a dual-CPU system. A single DIMM per CPU works but runs at a fraction of the available bandwidth. Memory runs at the lower of the DIMM rating and the CPU limit, so 2933 MT/s modules on a Silver 4214 run at 2400 MT/s.
Drive support depends on the backplane fitted at the factory. All backplanes are hot-plug. The controller options are:
| Controller | Type | Cache | RAID levels | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PERC H330 | Hardware RAID | None | 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 | Entry level; no write-back cache, so write-heavy RAID 5 is slow |
| PERC H730P | Hardware RAID | 2 GB NV | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | The common choice for virtualisation and database hosts |
| PERC H740P | Hardware RAID | 8 GB NV | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | Highest cache; best for large SSD arrays |
| HBA330 | Pass-through HBA | None | None (JBOD) | For software-defined storage: vSAN, Ceph, ZFS, Storage Spaces |
| BOSS-S1 | M.2 boot | None | 1 | Two M.2 SATA SSDs mirrored for the operating system |
Supported drive types are 12 Gb/s SAS and 6 Gb/s SATA in both hard disk and SSD form, plus U.2 NVMe on the 10-bay NVMe backplanes. Drives need the correct Dell 14th generation caddy: the 2.5" and 3.5" carriers are not interchangeable with 11th or 12th generation units.
Onboard networking is provided by a Network Daughter Card (NDC) that slots into a dedicated connector rather than a PCIe slot. Common options:
Beyond the NDC, the R640 offers up to three PCIe Gen3 slots depending on the riser configuration, typically two x16 and one x8 in low-profile form. That is enough for an additional NIC, a Fibre Channel HBA and a single-width accelerator such as the NVIDIA T4. Full-height or double-width GPUs need the 2U R740.
Two hot-plug redundant power supply bays, configured 1+1. Options are 495 W, 750 W, 1100 W and 1600 W, all 80 PLUS Platinum or Titanium. A dual-CPU system with a full memory load and a PERC generally sits within the 750 W envelope; specify 1100 W when adding NVMe drives or an accelerator. Both supplies in a system should be the same rating.
Every R640 includes iDRAC9 with a dedicated management port. The Express licence covers remote power, health monitoring and basic alerts; the Enterprise licence adds the virtual console, virtual media, remote firmware updates through the Lifecycle Controller and the full Redfish API, which is what most buyers actually want for a server in a rack they do not visit. Enterprise licences can be added to any unit. The R640 also supports OpenManage Enterprise for fleet management.
| Form factor | 1U rack, 2-socket |
|---|---|
| Height | 42.8 mm (1U) |
| Width | 434 mm |
| Depth | Approximately 734 mm with bezel, depending on chassis |
| Weight | Up to 21.9 kg fully configured |
| Rails | Dell ReadyRails II sliding or static; A7 kit for the R640 [VERIFY the kit you supply] |
| Operating temperature | 10 to 35 °C continuous, with Fresh Air 2.0 support to 45 °C in qualified configurations |
Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022; Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and 8; SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 and 15; Ubuntu Server LTS releases; VMware ESXi 6.5, 6.7 and 7.0; Citrix Hypervisor; and Proxmox VE, which is unsupported by Dell but widely deployed on this platform. Windows Server 2025 and ESXi 8 are outside Dell's support matrix for the R640 but run on it. Confirm your hypervisor's hardware compatibility list before buying if you need vendor support.
Every unit we sell has been through full hardware diagnostics and a burn-in run: memory tested across every installed DIMM, controller and drive health verified, both power supplies load-tested, and the iDRAC reset and confirmed reachable. BIOS is returned to defaults and the firmware brought to a stable release. Units carry a six-month warranty and are held in Doha, so a replacement part is a short drive away rather than a shipment from overseas.
Because the R640 is now past Dell's mainstream support window, we are also the practical route to keeping one in service: we stock the caddies, DIMMs, PERC cards, NDCs, power supplies and rail kits that fit it, and our hardware support plans cover units bought elsewhere as well as our own.
If you need a specific configuration that is not listed, tell us the CPU, memory and drive layout you want and we will quote a build from stock. Custom configurations are usually ready within two working days.
Same generation, same processors, same memory. The R640 is 1U with up to 10 drive bays and three low-profile PCIe slots; the R740 is 2U with up to 16 bays, more PCIe slots and support for full-height and double-width GPUs. Choose the R640 for density and the R740 for expansion.
Yes. The sockets are the same. Update the BIOS to a 2.x release first, then fit matching second-generation CPUs. Existing 2666 MT/s memory keeps working; the higher 2933 MT/s speed needs both a second-generation CPU and DIMMs rated for it.
Up to 1.5 TB with 64 GB RDIMMs, 3 TB with 128 GB LRDIMMs, and up to 7.68 TB with Intel Optane persistent memory on second-generation processors. All 24 slots are only available with both CPUs installed.
Only on the 10 x 2.5" chassis with an NVMe-capable backplane. The mixed backplane takes up to four NVMe drives in the last four bays; the all-NVMe backplane takes ten. The 4 x 3.5" and 8 x 2.5" chassis do not support NVMe in the front bays, though a BOSS card still gives you M.2 SATA boot drives.
PERC H730P for most virtualisation and database hosts. PERC H740P if the array is mostly SSDs. HBA330 if you are running vSAN, Ceph, ZFS or Storage Spaces, which need direct disk access rather than hardware RAID. Avoid the H330 for write-heavy workloads because it has no cache.
Single-width, low-profile cards only, such as the NVIDIA T4. Anything full-height or double-width, including the A-series and RTX cards, needs the 2U R740.
The R640 has passed the end of Dell's mainstream sales and its standard warranty terms. It remains one of the most common servers in production worldwide, parts are plentiful, and ServerDove supports it directly with stock held in Doha and hardware support plans that cover units the manufacturer no longer will.
Rack depth (allow around 800 mm including cabling), whether you need rails and a bezel, which chassis you need by drive count and type, and the iDRAC licence level. If you are not sure, send us the workload and we will suggest a configuration.
Yes. Delivery across Qatar is typically one day from Doha stock. Installation, racking, cabling and base configuration are available as a service, with a free site survey for rack builds.
