Enterprise Hard Drive Buying Guide: SAS vs SATA, 7.2K vs 10K, CMR vs SMR
Spinning drives still run most backup targets, file servers, and NAS builds, and the market is full of...
HP Z420 single-socket tower workstations in Doha. One Intel Xeon E5-1600 or E5-2600 processor on LGA2011, eight DDR3 ECC slots to 64 GB, two PCIe Gen3 x16 graphics slots and a 600 W supply. Tested and delivered across Qatar.
The HP Z420 is the single-processor tower of the Z-series generation HP launched in 2012, sitting below the dual-socket Z620 and Z820. It takes one Intel Xeon E5-1600 or E5-2600 processor on the LGA2011 socket, eight DDR3 ECC memory slots, two PCIe Gen3 x16 graphics slots and up to four internal drives, in a chassis HP designed to be opened and serviced without tools. Refurbished, it is a low-cost seat for CAD, 3D modelling, video editing and engineering software that wants a Xeon, ECC memory and a professional graphics card, and it also makes a sound small departmental server or lab machine. ServerDove supplies the Z420 as a barebone tower and builds complete configurations on request.
The Z420 is a convertible minitower in HP's Jack Black finish: the 5.25-inch drive cage rotates so the same chassis stands upright as a tower or lies flat as a desktop. Inside are three internal 3.5-inch bays with acoustic dampening rails fitted, and three external 5.25-inch bays for optical drives, a media card reader or a fourth hard drive. An optional handle kit in the top optical bay carries two small-form-factor drives and doubles as a lifting grip.
The side panel, expansion card retainer, processor heatsink and memory are all tool-less. HP offered a liquid cooling option for the processor, which is mandatory with the 150 W Xeon E5-2687W. For rack installations HP listed a depth-adjustable fixed rail kit shared with the Z2 and Z4 chassis line, so the Z420 can live in a cabinet as well as under a desk.

One LGA2011 socket on the Intel C602 chipset, with QPI to 8.0 GT/s. The Z420 accepts the Intel Xeon E5-1600 family (four and six cores) and selected E5-2600 processors (eight cores). Although the E5-2600 family supports two processors, the Z420 board has a single socket and cannot be upgraded to dual-CPU operation. The table lists the processors in HP's QuickSpecs for the model.
| Processor | Cores | Base clock | Cache | Memory speed | TDP | Hyper-Threading |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xeon E5-2687W | 8 | 3.1 GHz | 20 MB | 1600 MHz | 150 W | Yes |
| Xeon E5-2665 | 8 | 2.4 GHz | 20 MB | 1600 MHz | 115 W | Yes |
| Xeon E5-1660 | 6 | 3.3 GHz | 15 MB | 1600 MHz | 130 W | Yes |
| Xeon E5-1650 | 6 | 3.2 GHz | 12 MB | 1600 MHz | 130 W | Yes |
| Xeon E5-1620 | 4 | 3.6 GHz | 10 MB | 1600 MHz | 130 W | Yes |
| Xeon E5-1607 | 4 | 3.0 GHz | 10 MB | 1066 MHz | 130 W | No |
| Xeon E5-1603 | 4 | 2.8 GHz | 10 MB | 1066 MHz | 130 W | No |
The E5-1600 parts have the higher clocks and suit single-threaded CAD and modelling work; the E5-2665 trades clock speed for eight cores at a lower TDP. The E5-2687W needs the liquid cooler. HP revised the Z420 during its production life, so the processor fitted to a particular refurbished unit can differ from this list: tell us the workload and we confirm what a specific machine carries. Spare CPUs are in processors.
Eight DDR3 slots on four channels, two per channel. The Z420 supports only unbuffered ECC DIMMs (UDIMM); registered modules do not work in this board. Speeds of 1066, 1333 and 1600 MHz are supported, and the processor sets the clock: an E5-1603 or E5-1607 runs any DIMM at 1066 MHz. HP shipped 2 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB modules, giving a maximum of 64 GB with eight 8 GB DIMMs.
| Modules | Layout | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 4 x 4 GB | One DIMM per channel | 16 GB |
| 8 x 4 GB | All eight slots | 32 GB |
| 4 x 8 GB | One DIMM per channel | 32 GB |
| 8 x 8 GB | All eight slots | 64 GB |
Fit at least one DIMM in each of the four channels for full bandwidth; HP's load order is slots 1, 5, 3, 7, 8, 4, 6, 2, and the diagram is printed inside the side panel. A 32-bit operating system sees at most 4 GB. Compatible DDR3 ECC UDIMMs are in server memory; quote the DIMM type when ordering, because the same capacity in registered form will not post.
The Z420 has no integrated graphics, so a card is always required. Two full-length PCIe Gen3 x16 slots take the professional cards HP qualified, grouped by tier. Up to three 2D cards, two entry or mid-range 3D cards, or one high-end 3D card can be fitted; a third NVS card needs HP's Fan and Front Card Guide Kit for airflow.
| Tier | Cards in HP's QuickSpecs | Cards supported |
|---|---|---|
| Professional 2D | AMD FirePro 2270, NVIDIA NVS 300, NVS 310, Quadro NVS 450 | Up to 3 (NVS 450: 2) |
| Entry 3D | NVIDIA Quadro 410, Quadro 600, AMD FirePro V3900, V4900 | Up to 2 |
| Mid-range 3D | NVIDIA Quadro 2000, AMD FirePro V5900 | Up to 2 |
| High-end 3D | AMD FirePro V7900, NVIDIA Quadro 4000, Quadro 5000, Quadro 6000 | 1 |
| GPU compute | NVIDIA Tesla C2075 (with Quadro 410 or 600 for display) | 1 |
Later cards fit the x16 slots physically, but the 600 W supply and driver support decide whether they run. Send us the card you intend to use and we check the power connectors and slot clearance before you buy. Professional cards are listed in graphics cards.
The board carries a ten-channel SATA controller: two ports at 6 Gb/s and eight at 3 Gb/s, with six of them configurable as eSATA through an optional cable kit. Integrated RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 is available for SATA drives under Windows only, requires identical drives, and arrays must stay under 2 TB. SAS drives need an add-in controller: HP qualified the LSI 9212 4-port card and the LSI MegaRAID 9260-8i with optional battery backup.
| Drive type | Maximum drives | Capacities in the QuickSpecs | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5-inch SATA 7200 rpm | 4 | 250 GB to 3 TB, 11 TB total | 3 TB not supported as the first drive |
| 3.5-inch SAS 15K rpm | 4 | 300, 450, 600 GB | SAS controller card required |
| 2.5-inch SAS 10K rpm | 4 | 300, 600 GB | SAS controller card required |
| 2.5-inch SATA SSD | 4 | 128 GB to 300 GB | 128 and 256 GB only as the first drive |
Three drives sit in the internal 3.5-inch bays; a fourth takes one of the 5.25-inch bays, or the two-drive handle carrier for small-form-factor units. Optical options were a DVD-ROM, DVD writer and Blu-ray writer, plus a 22-in-1 media card reader. Modern 2.5-inch SATA SSDs from solid-state drives are the usual refurbishment upgrade; only the two 6 Gb/s ports give them full speed, so put the boot SSD on one of those. Hard disks in both sizes are in hard drives.
| Slot | Interface | Form |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (top) | PCIe Gen2 x4 mechanical, x1 electrical | Full-height, full-length |
| 2 | PCIe Gen3 x16 | Full-height, full-length |
| 3 | PCIe Gen2 x8 mechanical, x4 electrical, open-ended | Full-height, full-length |
| 4 | PCIe Gen3 x8, open-ended | Full-height, full-length |
| 5 | PCIe Gen3 x16 | Full-height, full-length |
| 6 | PCI 32-bit, 33 MHz | Full-height, full-length |
The open-ended connectors let a wider card sit in a narrower slot at reduced bandwidth. The legacy PCI slot still matters for older capture and instrumentation cards.
HP's option list added Intel and Broadcom single-port Gigabit cards, the HP NC360T dual-port Gigabit adapter, an 802.11b/g/n wireless card, a two-port IEEE 1394b card and a serial port bracket.
A single 600 W custom supply rated at 90% efficiency and 80 PLUS compliant, with active power factor correction. It is wide-ranging, accepting 90 to 269 V AC at 47 to 66 Hz, so it runs on Qatar's 240 V mains without any selector, and it withstands surges to 2000 V. Rated input current is 8.0 A. A built-in self-test LED on the supply shows whether it is healthy before the system is opened. Sleep-state draw is under 10 W. There is no redundant supply option; this is a workstation, not a server.
| Form factor | Convertible minitower, single socket |
|---|---|
| Height | 44.76 cm as a tower (17.9 cm laid flat) |
| Width | 17.78 cm as a tower (44.76 cm laid flat) |
| Depth | 44.52 cm |
| Weight | 12.5 kg minimum, 13.2 kg standard, 17.7 kg maximum |
| Operating temperature | 5 to 35 °C |
| Operating humidity | 8 to 85% relative, non-condensing |
| Operating altitude | Up to 3,048 m |
| Rack option | HP depth-adjustable fixed rail rack kit |
HP's QuickSpecs list Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and Windows 7 Professional 32-bit and 64-bit as preinstall options, with Windows 7 Enterprise supported. On the Linux side HP offered SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11, an HP Installer Kit for Linux with drivers for 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and 6, and a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation paper licence. The document predates Windows 8 and Windows 10, so those are not in HP's list for the Z420; if you need a current operating system on this platform, ask us before ordering and we will say what we have run on it.
ServerDove lists the Z420 as a barebone tower: chassis, board and power supply, ready for the processor, memory, graphics and drives you specify. Complete systems can be quoted from stock in Doha, and we source individual parts for a unit you already own. Every refurbished machine is tested before it is listed and is covered by the ServerDove warranty, with extended cover quoted on request.
Delivery across Qatar is typically one day from Doha stock, and installation and base configuration are available as a service. If the Z420 is too small, the dual-socket HP Z820 is the same generation with more of everything, and the HP Z440 is the direct successor with DDR4 and Xeon E5 v3 and v4 processors. The full range is in HP workstations. Send the configuration you need by WhatsApp on +974 5521 2108, email sales@serverdove.com or the contact page.
The Z440 replaced the Z420 in 2014. Both are single-socket towers with eight memory slots, two PCIe Gen3 x16 slots and a legacy PCI slot. The Z440 moves to the LGA2011 R3 socket with Xeon E5-1600 v3 and v4 processors, DDR4 registered ECC memory to 256 GB against the Z420's 64 GB of DDR3 unbuffered, six SATA 6 Gb/s ports against two, and offers a 700 W supply for larger graphics cards. The Z420 is the cheaper platform and still a capable CAD seat.
They are the same 2012 generation. The Z420 has one LGA2011 socket, eight DDR3 slots and a 600 W supply in a minitower. The Z820 is the dual-processor tower of the range, with far more memory slots, more drive bays and a larger power supply for multiple high-end graphics cards. Choose the Z420 for single-user CAD, modelling and editing; look at the Z820 for rendering farms, simulation and multi-GPU work.
Up to 64 GB across eight DDR3 slots, using 8 GB unbuffered ECC DIMMs. Only unbuffered ECC modules (UDIMM) are supported; registered DIMMs from a server will not work. Supported speeds are 1066, 1333 and 1600 MHz, and the processor sets the actual clock. Populate all four channels, ideally in matched sets of four or eight, for the best bandwidth.
No. The Z420 has a single LGA2011 socket on the Intel C602 chipset, and HP's QuickSpecs state that dual-processor configurations are not supported even with E5-2600 series CPUs. The quickest upgrade path is a higher-clocked E5-1600 or the eight-core E5-2665 or E5-2687W, the latter requiring HP's liquid cooling kit. For two processors, the Z620 or Z820 is the model to buy.
HP qualified professional cards from the NVIDIA NVS, Quadro and AMD FirePro lines, from 2D display cards up to the Quadro 6000 and FirePro V7900, plus the Tesla C2075 compute card alongside a Quadro for display. The two PCIe Gen3 x16 slots are full-length and full-height. Later cards fit physically but depend on the 600 W supply and available power connectors, so send us the model you want to fit and we will confirm.
Four drives: three in the internal 3.5-inch bays and a fourth in a 5.25-inch bay or the two-drive handle carrier. HP listed 3.5-inch SATA disks to 3 TB, SAS disks with an add-in controller, and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Any 2.5-inch SATA SSD works as a boot drive; use one of the two 6 Gb/s ports for it, since the other eight ports run at 3 Gb/s.
The Z420 launched in 2012 and HP replaced it with the Z440 in 2014, so it is well outside HP's sales window and standard support. HP's QuickSpecs list Windows 7 and enterprise Linux; Windows 10 is not on that list. Parts remain plentiful, and ServerDove supports the model directly from Doha with memory, drives, graphics cards and power supplies, and can advise on operating systems before you commit.
Yes. Stock is held in Doha and delivery across Qatar is typically one day. Installation and base configuration, including operating system for a professional graphics card, are available as a service. Business customers can ask for a quotation for several units, and the team can build a specific configuration to order.
