Enterprise Hard Drive Buying Guide: SAS vs SATA, 7.2K vs 10K, CMR vs SMR
Spinning drives still run most backup targets, file servers, and NAS builds, and the market is full of...
HP Z820 dual-processor workstations in Doha: Intel Xeon E5-2600 processors with up to 16 cores, 16 DDR3 ECC slots for up to 512 GB, seven expansion slots and an 850 W or 1125 W supply. Barebone towers and parts, tested and delivered across Qatar.
The Z820 was the dual-processor flagship of HP's 2012 Z workstation generation, sitting above the single-socket Z420 and Z620. It pairs two Intel Xeon E5-2600 processors on the C602 chipset with sixteen DDR3 ECC memory slots, an onboard LSI SAS 2308 controller and seven expansion slots, in a rackable minitower that HP built for tool-free service. Up to 16 processor cores and 512 GB of memory made it the choice for simulation, rendering, video finishing and GPU computing; today it is a low-cost route to a large-memory, many-slot machine for the same work at smaller scale. ServerDove holds the Z820 as a dual-CPU barebone tower in Doha and can build it up with processors, memory, drives and graphics to order.
HP lists the Z820 as a rackable minitower, 444 mm high, 203 mm wide and 525 mm deep, with three external 5.25-inch bays and four internal 3.5-inch bays. The datasheet highlights tool-free access and quiet running for a machine of this class. A barebone unit, as we stock it, is the chassis with system board, power supply and cooling, ready to receive processors, memory, drives and a graphics card. We can supply it bare for a customer who has their own parts, or build it to a specification.
The Z820 runs Intel Xeon E5-2600 series processors (the Sandy Bridge-EP generation) with two QuickPath links between the two sockets. The 2012 datasheet lists the following processors; all support Intel 64 and, apart from the two entry parts, Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost.
| Processor | Cores | Base clock | Cache | Memory speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xeon E5-2603 | 4 | 1.8 GHz | 10 MB | 1066 MHz |
| Xeon E5-2609 | 4 | 2.4 GHz | 10 MB | 1066 MHz |
| Xeon E5-2620 | 6 | 2.0 GHz | 15 MB | 1333 MHz |
| Xeon E5-2630 | 6 | 2.3 GHz | 15 MB | 1333 MHz |
| Xeon E5-2640 | 6 | 2.5 GHz | 15 MB | 1333 MHz |
| Xeon E5-2643 | 4 | 3.3 GHz | 10 MB | 1600 MHz |
| Xeon E5-2650 | 8 | 2.0 GHz | 20 MB | 1600 MHz |
| Xeon E5-2660 | 8 | 2.2 GHz | 20 MB | 1600 MHz |
| Xeon E5-2665 | 8 | 2.4 GHz | 20 MB | 1600 MHz |
| Xeon E5-2667 | 6 | 2.9 GHz | 15 MB | 1600 MHz |
| Xeon E5-2670 | 8 | 2.6 GHz | 20 MB | 1600 MHz |
| Xeon E5-2680 | 8 | 2.7 GHz | 20 MB | 1600 MHz |
| Xeon E5-2687 | 8 | 3.1 GHz | 20 MB | 1600 MHz |
| Xeon E5-2690 | 8 | 2.9 GHz | 20 MB | 1600 MHz |
Two eight-core processors give the 16 cores HP quotes. Memory speed follows the processor: the six-core E5-2620 to E5-2640 run DDR3 at 1333 MHz and the entry E5-2603 and E5-2609 at 1066 MHz, whatever the modules are rated for. Later Z820 system boards also accepted the E5-2600 v2 series, which this datasheet predates; send us the serial number of an existing unit and we will confirm what its board supports before you buy processors.
Sixteen DIMM slots for ECC DDR3 at up to 1600 MHz, arranged as eight channels, four per processor, with a maximum of 512 GB. HP notes that at least one DIMM must be fitted in every channel to realise full memory performance, so eight matched modules is the sensible minimum for a two-processor machine and four for a single processor. The slots belonging to the second processor are only usable when that processor is installed. Registered ECC DDR3 for this generation is carried in our server memory collection.
The Z820 was HP's platform for PCIe Gen3 professional graphics from NVIDIA and AMD, with support for two graphics processors driving up to eight displays, and for NVIDIA Maximus configurations that pair a Quadro with a Tesla compute card.
| Class | Cards listed in the datasheet |
|---|---|
| Professional 2D | NVIDIA NVS 300, NVS 310; AMD FirePro 2270 |
| Entry 3D | NVIDIA Quadro 410, Quadro 600; AMD FirePro V3900, V4900 |
| Mid-range 3D | NVIDIA Quadro 2000; AMD FirePro V5900 |
| High-end 3D and compute | NVIDIA Quadro 4000, 5000, 6000; AMD FirePro V7900; NVIDIA Tesla C2075 |
The Tesla C2075 requires the 1125 W power supply. These are the cards HP qualified at launch; newer professional cards are physically PCIe x16 and many buyers fit them, but power connectors, card length and driver support for the operating system decide whether a given card works. Browse the graphics cards range and ask us to check a pairing before ordering.
Four internal 3.5-inch bays and three external 5.25-inch bays, with the datasheet's maximum drive counts depending on drive type. Three controllers are integrated on the system board, and an LSI 9260-8i hardware RAID card was optional.
| Controller | Ports | RAID levels |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated SATA 6 Gb/s | 2 | 0, 1, 5, 10 |
| Integrated SATA 3 Gb/s | 4 | 0, 1, 5, 10 |
| Integrated LSI SAS 6 Gb/s (SAS 2308) | 8 | 0, 1, 10 |
| LSI 9260-8i (optional) | 8 | 0, 1, 5, 10 |
| Drive type | Maximum drives | Capacities listed |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5-inch SATA 7200 rpm HDD | 5 (4 at 3 TB) | 250 GB to 3 TB, 14 TB total |
| 2.5-inch SAS 10K HDD | 6 | 300 GB, 600 GB, 3.6 TB total |
| 3.5-inch SAS 15K HDD | 5 | 300 GB to 600 GB, 3 TB total |
| 2.5-inch SATA SSD | 6 | 128 GB to 300 GB, 1.8 TB total |
Optical options were DVD-ROM, DVD writer and Blu-ray writer. HP notes that SATA hardware RAID is not supported under Linux, where the kernel's software RAID is the alternative. Modern higher-capacity SATA SSDs and hard drives use the same 6 Gb/s interface and are the usual upgrade path for these machines.
| Slot type | Quantity |
|---|---|
| PCIe Gen3 x16 | 3 |
| PCIe Gen3 x16 mechanical, x8 electrical | 1 |
| PCIe Gen3 x8 mechanical, x4 electrical | 1 |
| PCIe Gen2 x8 mechanical, x4 electrical | 1 |
| Legacy PCI | 1 |
Networking is two integrated Intel 82579LM Gigabit Ethernet ports, with optional Broadcom or Intel adapters, and an Infineon TPM 1.2 controller is on the board. Front ports: two USB 3.0, one USB 2.0, one IEEE 1394a, microphone and headphone, with an optional 22-in-1 card reader. Rear ports: two USB 3.0, four USB 2.0, one IEEE 1394a, audio in, audio out and microphone, two PS/2, two RJ-45 and one serial. Three internal 2x5 headers provide six further USB 2.0 ports. Audio is integrated Realtek ALC262 HD.
Two supplies were offered: 850 W at 88% efficiency or 1125 W at 90% efficiency, both wide-ranging with active power factor correction. The 1125 W unit is required for the Tesla C2075 and is the safer choice for two high-end graphics cards or a full complement of drives. Our barebone listing states which supply is fitted; ask if you need the other.
| Form factor | Rackable minitower |
|---|---|
| Height | 44.4 cm |
| Width | 20.3 cm |
| Depth | 52.5 cm |
| Drive bays | 3 external 5.25-inch, 4 internal 3.5-inch |
The datasheet gives no weight figure. Expect a heavy unit for one person: a dual-processor tower of this size with drives fitted needs two people or a trolley to move safely.
HP offered the Z820 with Windows 7 Professional in 32-bit and 64-bit editions, the HP Linux Installer Kit, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop or Workstation as a paper licence with no preinstalled OS. Windows 10 and current Linux distributions run on this hardware in practice, but they are not in HP's published list for the model, so confirm driver availability for your graphics card and any add-in controller before committing.
We hold the Z820 as a dual-CPU barebone tower in Doha, tested before listing and covered by the ServerDove warranty, with extended cover quoted on request. Delivery across Qatar is typically one day from Doha stock. Tell us the processors, memory, drives and graphics you want and we will quote a complete build, or supply the parts for you to fit.
If you are weighing the Z820 against its successor, the HP Z840 moves to DDR4 and E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors in a similar chassis, while the HP Z420 is the single-socket model of the Z820's own generation. The full HP workstations range is listed together. Installation and base configuration are available as a service, bulk quotations are available to business customers, and you can reach us on WhatsApp (+974 5521 2108), at sales@serverdove.com or through the contact page.
The Z840 is the next generation. Both are dual-socket towers with sixteen DIMM slots, 850 W or 1125 W supplies and onboard SAS, but the Z820 uses Xeon E5-2600 processors with DDR3 memory up to 512 GB on the C602 chipset, while the Z840 uses E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors with DDR4 up to 1 TB on the C612 chipset and adds NVMe PCIe SSD options. The Z820 costs less; the Z840 has more headroom and newer parts.
The Z420 is the single-socket model of the same 2012 generation, with one LGA2011 socket, eight DDR3 slots, a maximum of 64 GB and a 600 W supply. The Z820 doubles the sockets and slots, raises the memory ceiling to 512 GB, adds onboard SAS and offers up to 1125 W. For one graphics card and moderate memory the Z420 is enough; for two processors, large datasets or GPU compute the Z820 is the one.
Intel Xeon E5-2600 series, from the four-core E5-2603 to eight-core parts such as the E5-2680 and E5-2690, with two identical processors for a dual configuration. Later Z820 boards also accepted the E5-2600 v2 series, but the datasheet we publish covers the original series only, so we check the board revision of a specific unit before recommending v2 processors.
Up to 512 GB across sixteen DDR3 ECC slots, running at up to 1600 MHz depending on the processor. Each processor has four memory channels; HP advises at least one DIMM per channel for full performance, so eight modules for two processors. The second processor's eight slots are only available when that processor is fitted.
Our barebone is the chassis with the system board, power supply, fans and heatsinks, without processors, memory, drives or a graphics card. You add two matching E5-2600 processors (or one), ECC DDR3 memory, SATA or SAS drives and a PCIe x16 graphics card, then install an operating system. We can supply any of those parts with the unit or build it complete for you.
Yes, 2.5-inch SATA SSDs work on the integrated 6 Gb/s SATA ports and are the most common upgrade. The board has no M.2 slot and the datasheet lists no NVMe support; an NVMe drive on a PCIe adapter can be used as a data drive, but booting from it depends on firmware and operating system, so ask us before planning on it.
The Z820 dates from 2012 and is well past HP's active sales period. HP still hosts drivers and manuals for it, and the parts are common on the second-hand market. For a definitive answer on HP service for a particular serial number, ask us and we will check before you commit.
Yes. Units are held in Doha and delivery across Qatar is typically one day. We can build the barebone to your specification before shipping, and installation, cabling and base configuration are available as a service. Business customers can request a quotation for several units. Hardware is covered by the ServerDove warranty.
