How to Inspect a Refurbished Server Before You Buy: A Practical Checklist
"Refurbished" describes a process, not a guarantee. A properly refurbished server has been diagnosed, tested and verified component...
Dell PowerEdge R650 servers in Qatar.
Refurbished Dell PowerEdge R650 1U rack servers, tested and stocked in Doha, with dual 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 32 DDR4 DIMM slots, PCIe Gen4 and up to 10 NVMe bays, delivered across Qatar within a day.
The R650 is the successor to the R640 in Dell's 15th generation PowerEdge line, released in 2021. It moves to 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable (Ice Lake) processors with up to 40 cores per socket, 32 memory slots at 3200 MT/s, PCIe Gen4 throughout, and a front backplane that can take ten NVMe drives without a separate switch card. It is still a current platform, which means firmware updates continue and a refurbished unit is a sensible way to get current-generation performance without the current-generation price.
The R650 shipped in three front-bay configurations plus optional rear 2.5" bays on some builds. The chassis cannot be converted from one to another after purchase, so choose by how many drives you need and what type.
| Chassis | Front bays | Drive types | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 x 3.5" | 4 | SAS, SATA | Bulk capacity, backup targets, file servers |
| 8 x 2.5" | 8 | SAS, SATA, SSD | General virtualisation and application hosts |
| 10 x 2.5" | 10 | SAS, SATA, SSD, up to 10 NVMe | All-flash databases, VDI, vSAN and software-defined storage |
All variants take the BOSS-S2 card with two hot-plug M.2 SATA SSDs for a mirrored boot volume, keeping the front bays free for data.
The R650 takes 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable (Ice Lake-SP, 2021) processors in two LGA4189 sockets, with TDPs up to 270 W, up to 40 cores per socket, eight memory channels per socket and 64 PCIe Gen4 lanes per socket. It is not compatible with first or second generation Xeon Scalable CPUs. Both CPUs in a system must be identical. The list below covers the SKUs most commonly found in refurbished R650 units. [VERIFY: which CPUs you stock for this model]
| Processor | Cores | Base clock | TDP | Memory speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xeon Silver 4309Y | 8 | 2.8 GHz | 105 W | 2667 MT/s |
| Xeon Silver 4310 | 12 | 2.1 GHz | 120 W | 2667 MT/s |
| Xeon Silver 4314 | 16 | 2.4 GHz | 135 W | 2667 MT/s |
| Xeon Silver 4316 | 20 | 2.3 GHz | 150 W | 2667 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 5315Y | 8 | 3.2 GHz | 140 W | 2933 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 5317 | 12 | 3.0 GHz | 150 W | 2933 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 5318Y | 24 | 2.1 GHz | 165 W | 2933 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 5320 | 26 | 2.2 GHz | 185 W | 2933 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 6326 | 16 | 2.9 GHz | 185 W | 3200 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 6330 | 28 | 2.0 GHz | 205 W | 3200 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 6338 | 32 | 2.0 GHz | 205 W | 3200 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 6342 | 24 | 2.8 GHz | 230 W | 3200 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 6348 | 28 | 2.6 GHz | 235 W | 3200 MT/s |
| Xeon Platinum 8352Y | 32 | 2.2 GHz | 205 W | 3200 MT/s |
| Xeon Platinum 8358 | 32 | 2.6 GHz | 250 W | 3200 MT/s |
| Xeon Platinum 8368 | 38 | 2.4 GHz | 270 W | 3200 MT/s |
| Xeon Platinum 8380 | 40 | 2.3 GHz | 270 W | 3200 MT/s |
Silver processors cap memory at 2667 MT/s and Gold 5xxx at 2933 MT/s; Gold 6xxx and Platinum run the full 3200 MT/s. Ice Lake also brings AVX-512 improvements and eight memory channels, so like-for-like core counts are noticeably faster than on the R640.
Thirty-two DDR4 DIMM slots, sixteen per processor across eight channels. Registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) modules are supported; they cannot be mixed in the same system. With one CPU installed, only the sixteen slots on that side are usable.
| Module | Capacities | Maximum system memory |
|---|---|---|
| RDIMM | 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB | 4 TB with 32 x 128 GB |
| LRDIMM | 128 GB, 256 GB | 8 TB with 32 x 256 GB |
| Intel Optane Persistent Memory 200 | 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB | Up to 16 modules alongside DRAM, in mixed configurations |
For best performance populate all eight channels per CPU in matched sets: 8, 16 or 32 DIMMs in total for a dual-CPU system. Two DIMMs per channel keeps full speed on this platform.
Drive support depends on the backplane fitted at the factory. All backplanes are hot-plug, and the 10-bay NVMe backplane connects directly to the CPUs over PCIe Gen4. The controller options are the PERC 11 family:
| Controller | Type | Cache | RAID levels | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PERC H345 | Hardware RAID | None | 0, 1, 10 | Entry level; no cache |
| PERC H355 | Hardware RAID | None | 0, 1, 10 | Entry level, PCIe Gen4; no cache |
| PERC H755 | Hardware RAID | 8 GB NV | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | The common choice for virtualisation and database hosts |
| PERC H755N | Hardware RAID (NVMe) | 8 GB NV | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | Hardware RAID across the front NVMe drives |
| HBA355i | Pass-through HBA | None | None (JBOD) | For software-defined storage: vSAN, Ceph, ZFS, Storage Spaces |
| BOSS-S2 | M.2 boot | None | 1 | Two hot-plug M.2 SATA SSDs mirrored for the operating system |
Supported drive types are 12 Gb/s SAS and 6 Gb/s SATA in hard disk and SSD form, plus U.2 NVMe on the NVMe backplane. Drives need Dell 15th generation caddies, which differ from the 14th generation ones.
Onboard networking comes from an OCP 3.0 mezzanine slot rather than the older NDC, so the adapter can be changed without opening the chassis. Common options:
Beyond the OCP slot, the R650 offers up to three PCIe Gen4 slots depending on the riser configuration, all x16, which is enough for a Fibre Channel HBA, a 100 GbE adapter and a single-width accelerator such as the NVIDIA A2 or T4. Full-height or double-width GPUs need the 2U R750.
Two hot-plug redundant power supply bays, configured 1+1. Options are 800 W, 1100 W and 1400 W in Platinum and Titanium grades. A dual-CPU system with a full memory load, ten NVMe drives and a PERC generally needs the 1100 W units; specify 1400 W for the 250 W and 270 W processors. Both supplies in a system should be the same rating.
Every R650 includes iDRAC9 (the 15th generation firmware line) with a dedicated management port. The Express licence covers remote power, health monitoring and basic alerts; the Enterprise licence adds the virtual console, virtual media, remote firmware updates through the Lifecycle Controller and the full Redfish API; the Datacenter licence adds telemetry streaming and thermal management. Licences can be added to any unit. OpenManage Enterprise handles fleet management.

Windows Server 2019 and 2022; Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and 9; SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15; Ubuntu Server 20.04 and 22.04 LTS; VMware ESXi 7.0 U2 and later and 8.0; Citrix Hypervisor; and Proxmox VE, which is unsupported by Dell but widely deployed on this platform. Windows Server 2016 is not on the support matrix for this generation.
Every unit we sell has been through full hardware diagnostics and a burn-in run: memory tested across every installed DIMM, controller and drive health verified, both power supplies load-tested, and the management controller reset and confirmed reachable. BIOS is returned to defaults and the firmware brought to a stable release. Units carry a six-month warranty and are held in Doha, so a replacement part is a short drive away rather than a shipment from overseas. [VERIFY: same testing and warranty wording as the R640 page]
The R650 is still inside Dell's support window, so firmware and driver updates continue to arrive and a Dell ProSupport contract can be attached to a refurbished unit by serial number if your policy requires it. We stock the caddies, DIMMs, controllers, rails and power supplies it needs, and our hardware support plans are the local alternative. [VERIFY: parts stocked for this model; ProSupport attach on used serials]
If you need a specific configuration that is not listed, tell us the CPU, memory and drive layout you want and we will quote a build from stock. Custom configurations are usually ready within two working days. [VERIFY: lead time]
The R650 is one generation newer: 3rd generation Xeon Scalable with up to 40 cores against 28, 32 memory slots at 3200 MT/s against 24 at 2933, PCIe Gen4 against Gen3, ten direct-attached NVMe bays, and an OCP 3.0 network slot. Same 1U footprint and the same three chassis layouts. Refurbished R640s are markedly cheaper; the R650 is the choice when you need the extra cores, memory bandwidth or NVMe throughput, or a platform still inside Dell's support window.
Yes. The R650 is a current-generation platform: BIOS, iDRAC and driver updates continue to be released, and support contracts can be attached to it. That is one of the main reasons to choose it over a 14th generation unit for a production role.
No. The R650 uses the LGA4189 socket and 3rd generation Xeon Scalable processors only; first and second generation CPUs do not fit. Memory is DDR4 in both, and 3200 MT/s RDIMMs are cross-compatible, but the R650 has 32 slots and eight channels per CPU, so plan the layout for that.
Up to 4 TB with 128 GB RDIMMs, 8 TB with 256 GB LRDIMMs, and more with Intel Optane Persistent Memory 200 in mixed configurations. All 32 slots are only available with both CPUs installed.
Yes, natively. The 10 x 2.5" chassis with the NVMe backplane connects all ten bays directly to the processors over PCIe Gen4, and the PERC H755N adds hardware RAID across them if you need it. The 8 x 2.5" and 4 x 3.5" chassis are SAS and SATA only.
PERC H755 for most virtualisation and database hosts on SAS or SATA drives. PERC H755N for hardware RAID on NVMe. HBA355i if you are running vSAN, Ceph, ZFS or Storage Spaces, which need direct disk access. The H345 and H355 have no cache and suit boot mirrors and light duty only.
Single-width, low-profile cards only, such as the NVIDIA A2 or T4. Anything full-height or double-width, including the A30, A40 and A100, needs the 2U R750. [VERIFY: which GPUs you have qualified in this chassis]
Rack depth (allow around 800 mm including cabling), whether you need rails and a bezel, which chassis you need by drive count and type, and the iDRAC licence level. If you are not sure, send us the workload and we will suggest a configuration.
Yes. Delivery across Qatar is typically one day from Doha stock. Installation, racking, cabling and base configuration are available as a service, with a free site survey for rack builds. [VERIFY: same delivery and installation wording as the R640 page]
