Adding voice to an ISR router
Voice on an ISR depends on three things: call control software such as Cisco CME, PVDM DSP modules that process calls to analogue or digital lines, and interface modules that provide the physical ports. The NIM-2FXS/4FXO adds FXS ports for analogue handsets or fax, and FXO ports for analogue lines. Router modules are listed in network modules. What is the Cisco ISR 4321 used for?
The ISR 4321 is a branch router from Cisco's ISR 4000 series. It connects a site to the internet or to other offices through its onboard Gigabit ports, and it can run on-site call control in its voice configuration. Modules added to its slots give it extra functions such as analogue voice ports.
What is the difference between a router and a firewall?
A router's main job is to move traffic between networks and choose the path. A firewall's main job is to decide which traffic is allowed, inspecting it against a security policy. Routers often include basic filtering and firewalls can route, but at an internet edge where security matters most, a dedicated firewall is common.
What does a PVDM4 DSP module do?
A PVDM4 module adds digital signal processors to a Cisco voice router. These handle the conversion between IP voice and analogue or digital phone lines, and also transcoding and conferencing. Without enough DSP capacity, calls over those lines cannot be set up. Larger modules support more simultaneous calls.
Do Cisco routers need licences?
Many router features, including voice, security and some performance levels, are enabled by licences as well as by the hardware. What a unit is supplied with varies. Tell the team which functions you need and they will confirm what the listed router includes before you order.
