How to Inspect a Refurbished Server Before You Buy: A Practical Checklist
"Refurbished" describes a process, not a guarantee. A properly refurbished server has been diagnosed, tested and verified component...
Shop Dell PowerEdge T440 servers in Qatar from ServerDove. The Dell T440 is a reliable tower server designed for virtualization, file storage, business applications and growing IT environments.
Our tested and warranty-backed Dell PowerEdge T440 servers include Intel Xeon processors, ECC memory and enterprise storage solutions for businesses and offices across Doha and Qatar.
Refurbished Dell PowerEdge T440 tower servers, tested and stocked in Doha, with dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 16 DDR4 DIMM slots and 8 or 16 drive bays, delivered across Qatar within a day.
The T440 is the dual-socket tower in Dell's 14th generation PowerEdge line: the same Intel Xeon Scalable platform, 16 memory slots and iDRAC9 as the R440, in a quiet, floor-standing chassis that needs no rack. That is exactly what a small business, a clinic, a school or a site office wants when the server lives under a desk or in a cupboard. It carries more drive bays and more PCIe slots than the R440, and can be converted to a 5U rack unit later with Dell's rail kit if the office grows into a rack.
The T440 shipped with either a cabled or a hot-plug backplane in two bay layouts. The bay count is fixed by the backplane and cage fitted, so choose by how many drives you need and whether you need to swap them without powering down.
| Chassis | Bays | Drive types | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 x 3.5" cabled | 4 | SAS, SATA | Entry file server or domain controller; drives are not hot-swappable |
| 8 x 3.5" hot-plug | 8 | SAS, SATA | File and backup servers, surveillance storage |
| 16 x 2.5" hot-plug | 16 | SAS, SATA, SSD | Virtualisation and database hosts |
All layouts take an optional BOSS card with two M.2 SATA SSDs for a mirrored boot volume, and there is space for an internal optical drive.
The T440 takes first-generation (Skylake-SP, 2017) and second-generation (Cascade Lake, 2019) Intel Xeon Scalable processors in two LGA3647 sockets, with a processor power ceiling of 105 W. That covers Bronze, Silver and the lower-power Gold 5xxx SKUs; the high-core-count Gold 6xxx and Platinum parts are not supported. Both CPUs in a system must be identical. [VERIFY: 105 W ceiling and which CPUs you stock for this model]
| Processor | Cores | Base clock | TDP | Memory speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xeon Bronze 3204 | 6 | 1.9 GHz | 85 W | 2133 MT/s |
| Xeon Silver 4208 | 8 | 2.1 GHz | 85 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Silver 4210 | 10 | 2.2 GHz | 85 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Silver 4214 | 12 | 2.2 GHz | 85 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Silver 4216 | 16 | 2.1 GHz | 100 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 5215 | 10 | 2.5 GHz | 85 W | 2666 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 5217 | 8 | 3.0 GHz | 115 W | 2666 MT/s |
| Processor | Cores | Base clock | TDP | Memory speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xeon Bronze 3106 | 8 | 1.7 GHz | 85 W | 2133 MT/s |
| Xeon Silver 4108 | 8 | 1.8 GHz | 85 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Silver 4110 | 8 | 2.1 GHz | 85 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Silver 4114 | 10 | 2.2 GHz | 85 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Silver 4116 | 12 | 2.1 GHz | 85 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 5118 | 12 | 2.3 GHz | 105 W | 2400 MT/s |
| Xeon Gold 5120 | 14 | 2.2 GHz | 105 W | 2400 MT/s |
Silver processors cap memory at 2400 MT/s and Gold 5xxx at 2666 MT/s regardless of the DIMMs fitted. A single-CPU T440 is common and perfectly adequate for a file server or a small hypervisor; the second socket can be populated later.
Sixteen DDR4 DIMM slots, eight per processor across six channels (two channels carry two DIMMs, four carry one). Registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) modules are supported; they cannot be mixed in the same system. With one CPU installed, only the eight slots on that side are usable.
| Module | Capacities | Maximum system memory |
|---|---|---|
| RDIMM | 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB | 1 TB with 16 x 64 GB |
| LRDIMM | 64 GB | 1 TB with 16 x 64 GB |
For best performance populate all six channels per CPU: 6 or 12 DIMMs in total for a dual-CPU system before filling the remaining four slots. Memory runs at the lower of the DIMM rating and the CPU limit, so 2666 MT/s modules on a Silver 4214 run at 2400 MT/s.
Drive support depends on the backplane fitted at the factory. The controller options are:
| Controller | Type | Cache | RAID levels | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PERC S140 | Software RAID (SATA) | None | 0, 1, 5, 10 | Onboard; SATA only, adequate for boot mirrors |
| PERC H330 | Hardware RAID | None | 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 | Entry level; no write-back cache, so write-heavy RAID 5 is slow |
| PERC H730P | Hardware RAID | 2 GB NV | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | The common choice for virtualisation and database hosts |
| PERC H740P | Hardware RAID | 8 GB NV | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | Highest cache; best for SSD arrays |
| HBA330 | Pass-through HBA | None | None (JBOD) | For software-defined storage: vSAN, Ceph, ZFS, Storage Spaces |
| BOSS-S1 | M.2 boot | None | 1 | Two M.2 SATA SSDs mirrored for the operating system |
Supported drive types are 12 Gb/s SAS and 6 Gb/s SATA in both hard disk and SSD form. The T440 has no NVMe bays; a PCIe M.2 or U.2 adapter is the route to flash beyond the BOSS card. Hot-plug drives need the correct Dell 14th generation caddy; the cabled chassis uses screw-in trays.
Onboard networking is a dual-port Broadcom 5720 1 GbE LOM. Faster networking goes into one of five PCIe Gen3 slots (two x16 and three x8, full-height), which is where the tower beats its 1U sibling. Common choices:
Five full-height slots leave room for a PERC, a 10 GbE adapter, a tape or SAS HBA and a GPU at the same time, which is the usual reason to pick the T440 over the R440.
Two hot-plug redundant power supply bays, configured 1+1, with 495 W or 750 W Platinum units; entry configurations shipped with a single cabled supply. A dual-CPU system with 16 drives and a PERC sits within 750 W. Both supplies in a system should be the same rating.
Every T440 includes iDRAC9 with a dedicated management port. The Express licence covers remote power, health monitoring and basic alerts; the Enterprise licence adds the virtual console, virtual media, remote firmware updates through the Lifecycle Controller and the full Redfish API, which is what most buyers actually want for a server they do not visit. Enterprise licences can be added to any unit. The T440 also supports OpenManage Enterprise for fleet management.

Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022; Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, 8 and 9; SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 and 15; Ubuntu Server LTS releases; VMware ESXi 6.5, 6.7, 7.0 and 8.0; Citrix Hypervisor; and Proxmox VE, which is unsupported by Dell but widely deployed on this platform. Confirm your hypervisor's hardware compatibility list before buying if you need vendor support.
Every unit we sell has been through full hardware diagnostics and a burn-in run: memory tested across every installed DIMM, controller and drive health verified, both power supplies load-tested, and the management controller reset and confirmed reachable. BIOS is returned to defaults and the firmware brought to a stable release. Units carry a six-month warranty and are held in Doha, so a replacement part is a short drive away rather than a shipment from overseas. [VERIFY: same testing and warranty wording as the R640 page]
Because the T440 is now past the manufacturer's mainstream support window, we are also the practical route to keeping one in service: we stock the caddies, DIMMs, controllers, rails and power supplies it needs, and our hardware support plans cover units the manufacturer no longer will. [VERIFY: parts stocked for this model]
If you need a specific configuration that is not listed, tell us the CPU, memory and drive layout you want and we will quote a build from stock. Custom configurations are usually ready within two working days. [VERIFY: lead time]
Same processors, same 16 memory slots, same iDRAC9. The T440 is a tower with up to 16 drive bays and five full-height PCIe slots, quiet enough for an office; the R440 is a 1U rack unit with up to 10 bays and two low-profile slots. If you have a rack, buy the R440; if you do not, the T440.
Yes. Dell's tower-to-rack conversion kit turns it into a 5U rack-mount unit with sliding rails. It takes five rack units, so it is a fit for a small office rack rather than a dense data centre row. [VERIFY: kit availability]
It is designed for office placement and runs quietly at idle and normal load; a 1U rack server in the same room would be far more intrusive. Fans ramp under sustained heavy load or in a warm room, so keep it out of enclosed cupboards without airflow.
Bronze, Silver and the lower-power Gold 5xxx parts of both Xeon Scalable generations, up to 105 W. Gold 6xxx and Platinum processors are not supported. A single processor is a common and sensible configuration for a file server or small hypervisor. [VERIFY: 105 W ceiling]
Up to 1 TB with 64 GB modules across the 16 slots. With one processor fitted, eight slots are available.
Not in the drive bays. A BOSS card gives two M.2 SATA boot SSDs, and a PCIe NVMe adapter can add a fast cache or database drive. For NVMe bays, look at the R640.
PERC H730P for most virtualisation and application hosts. PERC H740P if the array is mostly SSDs. HBA330 if you are running ZFS, Storage Spaces or another software RAID. The onboard S140 is fine for a SATA boot mirror and nothing more.
Whether the drives need to be hot-swappable (cabled and hot-plug backplanes are different chassis), how many drives and of what type, whether you need a rack conversion kit, and the iDRAC licence level. If you are not sure, send us the workload and we will suggest a configuration.
Yes. Delivery across Qatar is typically one day from Doha stock. Installation, racking, cabling and base configuration are available as a service, with a free site survey for rack builds. [VERIFY: same delivery and installation wording as the R640 page]
