ServerDove assembled this refurbished tower in Doha from a PowerEdge T440 8LFF barebone. Fitted are one Intel Xeon Gold 6138 20 core processor, 32GB of DDR4 ECC RDIMM memory, two HGST Ultrastar 4TB 7.2K 12Gb/s SAS 3.5 inch hard drives for 8TB in total, an H330 RAID controller, iDRAC remote management and dual redundant power supplies. The eight bay LFF chassis is the larger of the two T440 front options, leaving six bays open. Dual power supplies and iDRAC put this build a step above a basic office tower: it can sit in a branch office in Qatar and be managed from head office, and it survives the loss of a mains feed or a supply. It suits a file and print server, a backup repository or a small hypervisor for line of business applications.

Everything below is installed and cabled. The H330 controller manages the two SAS drives; six further bays are ready for caddied drives.

Compare the workload you have in mind against the fitted components.
Mirror the two drives for 4TB of protected storage and this becomes a dependable file server or backup target with remote management, the configuration most branch offices actually need. The 7.2K drives favour capacity over speed, so it is not the build for a transactional database.
For virtualisation, 32GB supports a few small machines; the 20 core processor will not be the constraint. Adding memory is the first upgrade to plan.
