How to Inspect a Refurbished Server Before You Buy: A Practical Checklist
"Refurbished" describes a process, not a guarantee. A properly refurbished server has been diagnosed, tested and verified component...
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 2U servers in Doha. Xeon Scalable, 24 DDR4 slots, 8 to 24 bays, Smart Array RAID. 6-month warranty
Refurbished HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 2U rack servers, tested and stocked in Doha, with dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 24 DDR4 DIMM slots, SFF or LFF drive cages and iLO 5 management, delivered across Qatar within a day.
The DL380 Gen10 is HPE's dual-socket 2U workhorse, released in 2017 and, by most counts, the best-selling rack server in the world. It runs two Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 24 memory slots and a modular drive cage system that scales from 8 small-form-factor bays to 24, or from 12 large-form-factor bays upward with an optional mid-plane cage. Add up to eight PCIe slots, three GPU-capable risers and HPE's iLO 5 management, and it covers the same ground as the Dell R740: virtualisation, databases, backup, and anything that needs room to grow. Refurbished, it is the HPE platform we are asked for most, and parts and firmware remain easy to source.
HPE builds the DL380 Gen10 around removable drive cages rather than fixed backplanes, so a unit is described by its base chassis and the cages fitted. The two base chassis are SFF (2.5") and LFF (3.5"); they cannot be converted into each other, but SFF units can often be expanded by adding a second or third 8-bay cage.
| Chassis | Front bays | Drive types | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 SFF | 8 | SAS, SATA, SSD | Entry virtualisation hosts, application servers |
| 16 SFF | 16 | SAS, SATA, SSD | General virtualisation and database hosts |
| 24 SFF | 24 | SAS, SATA, SSD, NVMe with the NVMe cage | All-flash databases, VDI, vSAN nodes |
| 12 LFF | 12 | SAS, SATA | Bulk capacity, backup targets, file servers, Ceph or ZFS nodes |
A rear 2 SFF cage is available on most configurations for boot drives, and an M.2 riser or NS204i boot device keeps the operating system off the front bays. [VERIFY: which cage configurations you stock]
The DL380 Gen10 takes first-generation (Skylake-SP, 2017) and second-generation (Cascade Lake, 2019) Intel Xeon Scalable processors in two LGA3647 sockets, with TDPs up to 205 W. Second-generation CPUs need System ROM U30 at v2.00 or later and unlock 2933 MT/s memory. Both CPUs in a system must be identical. The list below covers the SKUs most commonly found in refurbished DL380 Gen10 units; the platform supports the full range up to 28 cores. [VERIFY: which CPUs you stock for this model]

Silver and Gold 5xxx processors cap memory at 2400 or 2666 MT/s regardless of the DIMMs fitted. If memory bandwidth matters to your workload, a Gold 6xxx or Platinum with second-generation silicon is the difference between 2400 and 2933 MT/s on the same board.
Twenty-four DDR4 DIMM slots, twelve per processor across six channels. HPE SmartMemory registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) modules are supported; they cannot be mixed in the same system. With one CPU installed, only the twelve slots on that side are usable. Third-party DIMMs work but the system reports them as non-HPE memory and disables some HPE Fast Fault Tolerance features.
| Module | Capacities | Maximum system memory |
|---|---|---|
| RDIMM | 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB | 1.5 TB with 24 x 64 GB |
| LRDIMM | 64 GB, 128 GB | 3 TB with 24 x 128 GB |
| Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory (second-gen CPUs only) | 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB | Up to 12 modules alongside DRAM, in mixed configurations |
For best performance populate all six channels per CPU in matched sets: 6, 12 or 24 DIMMs in total for a dual-CPU system. Memory runs at the lower of the DIMM rating and the CPU limit.
Drive support depends on the cages fitted. All cages are hot-plug. HPE Smart Array controllers come in two forms: modular (the "-a" suffix, fitted to a dedicated slot) and PCIe card ("-p" suffix). The controller options are:
| Controller | Type | Cache | RAID levels | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Array S100i | Software RAID (SATA) | None | 0, 1, 5, 10 | Onboard; SATA only, adequate for boot mirrors |
| Smart Array E208i-a | Hardware RAID / HBA | None | 0, 1, 5, 10 | No cache, so write-heavy RAID 5 is slow; good HBA-mode choice |
| Smart Array P408i-a | Hardware RAID | 2 GB FBWC | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | The common choice for virtualisation and database hosts |
| Smart Array P816i-a | Hardware RAID | 4 GB FBWC | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | 16 lanes; needed for 24 SFF without an expander |
| Smart Array P408e-p | Hardware RAID | 4 GB FBWC | 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 | External SAS ports for D3610 or D3710 expansion shelves |
The E208i-a and P408i-a can be switched to HBA (pass-through) mode for vSAN, Ceph, ZFS and Storage Spaces. Supported drive types are 12 Gb/s SAS and 6 Gb/s SATA in hard disk and SSD form, plus U.2 NVMe with the NVMe cage and riser. Drives need HPE Gen10 Smart Carriers (SC) for the SFF cages; Gen8 and Gen9 carriers are not interchangeable.
Onboard networking is an embedded HPE 331i quad-port 1 GbE adapter, and a FlexibleLOM slot takes a second adapter without using a PCIe slot. Common FlexibleLOM options:
Beyond the FlexibleLOM, the DL380 Gen10 offers up to eight PCIe Gen3 slots across three risers, and the GPU riser configuration supports up to three double-width 300 W accelerators such as the NVIDIA V100 or A-series cards. Fibre Channel HBAs, 100 GbE adapters and SAS expansion controllers all have room.
Two hot-plug redundant Flex Slot power supply bays, configured 1+1. Options are 500 W, 800 W and 1600 W in Platinum and Titanium grades. A dual-CPU system with a full memory load and a Smart Array generally sits within the 800 W envelope; GPU configurations need 1600 W units. Both supplies in a system should be the same rating.
Every DL380 Gen10 includes iLO 5 with a dedicated management port. iLO Standard covers remote power, health monitoring and basic alerts; iLO Advanced adds the virtual console, virtual media, remote firmware updates and the full Redfish API, which is what most buyers actually want for a server in a rack they do not visit. Advanced licences can be added to any unit. Intelligent Provisioning handles bare-metal OS installs, and HPE OneView or iLO Amplifier Pack cover fleet management.

Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022; Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, 8 and 9; SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 and 15; Ubuntu Server LTS releases; VMware ESXi 6.5, 6.7, 7.0 and 8.0; Citrix Hypervisor; and Proxmox VE, which is unsupported by HPE but widely deployed on this platform. Confirm your hypervisor's hardware compatibility list before buying if you need vendor support.
Every unit we sell has been through full hardware diagnostics and a burn-in run: memory tested across every installed DIMM, controller and drive health verified, both power supplies load-tested, and the management controller reset and confirmed reachable. BIOS is returned to defaults and the firmware brought to a stable release. Units carry a six-month warranty and are held in Doha, so a replacement part is a short drive away rather than a shipment from overseas. [VERIFY: same testing and warranty wording as the R640 page]
Because the DL380 Gen10 is now past the manufacturer's mainstream support window, we are also the practical route to keeping one in service: we stock the caddies, DIMMs, controllers, rails and power supplies it needs, and our hardware support plans cover units the manufacturer no longer will. [VERIFY: parts stocked for this model]
If you need a specific configuration that is not listed, tell us the CPU, memory and drive layout you want and we will quote a build from stock. Custom configurations are usually ready within two working days. [VERIFY: lead time]
Same generation, same processors, same memory. The DL380 is 2U with up to 24 SFF or 12 LFF front bays, up to eight PCIe slots and GPU support; the DL360 is 1U with up to 10 SFF bays and three low-profile slots. Choose the DL380 for expansion and the DL360 for density.
They are direct equivalents: same CPU family, same 24 DIMM slots, same 2U expansion. The practical differences are management (iLO 5 versus iDRAC9), the cage system (HPE units can often add drive bays after purchase, Dell units cannot), and which vendor your team already knows. We stock both; buy the one your other servers are.
Yes. The sockets are the same. Update the System ROM to a v2.00 or later release first, then fit matching second-generation CPUs. Existing 2666 MT/s memory keeps working; the higher 2933 MT/s speed needs both a second-generation CPU and DIMMs rated for it.
Up to 1.5 TB with 64 GB RDIMMs, 3 TB with 128 GB LRDIMMs, and more with Intel Optane persistent memory on second-generation processors. All 24 slots are only available with both CPUs installed.
Often, yes. An 8 SFF unit has space for a second and third 8-bay cage in the front, plus a rear 2 SFF cage, as long as the controller and cabling can serve them. An LFF chassis cannot be converted to SFF or the other way round. Tell us the drive count you need and we will confirm what the specific unit can take. [VERIFY: whether you stock the additional cages]
Yes, with the NVMe drive cage and its riser, which route PCIe lanes directly to the bays. Up to 20 NVMe drives are possible on a 24 SFF chassis in the right configuration, though most refurbished units are SAS and SATA only. A standard SFF cage will not take NVMe drives.
P408i-a for most virtualisation and database hosts. P816i-a if you are filling 24 SFF bays. E208i-a in HBA mode if you are running vSAN, Ceph, ZFS or Storage Spaces, which need direct disk access. Avoid the software S100i for anything beyond a SATA boot mirror.
Rack depth (allow around 800 mm including cabling), whether you need rails and a bezel, which cage layout you need by drive count and type, whether you need the GPU riser, and the iLO licence level. If you are not sure, send us the workload and we will suggest a configuration.
Yes. Delivery across Qatar is typically one day from Doha stock. Installation, racking, cabling and base configuration are available as a service, with a free site survey for rack builds. [VERIFY: same delivery and installation wording as the R640 page]
